I know this probably falls into the category of " common sense ", but those ex taxi AU fortes with 400,000kms, 600,000kms etc, been seeing a lot locally for dirt cheap. Mechanically A1 etc.
just out of curiosity. If everything is alright, despite the very high kms. What can you expect out of such a car? cheers |

Of course, if you don't mind the taxi handling and don't do any of the above, then for a $2k runabout, they're not a bad option (there are worse cars on the road).

A well maintained ex taxi can be a good runaround taxis are required to pass a strict inspection every 6 months ( in NSW at least) and get failed for things as little ar the door strap to stop the door going too far has any play of unrepaired damage to upholstry even a small tear
I know of an ex taxi running around that i used to drive I has done 780 000Ks and never had the head off it. just have a good look before you pay for it

Yeah mine's pretty special to me, i've been swinging a spanner off it since it had 92k on the clock sometime in 2003
It became mine five years ago with 590k on the clock and it's been a damn decent car to me.

cheers for the reply's. Whoa 700,000. Relived to hear they go through strict inspection. Also excuse the noob question, but what exactly is Mechanically A1?,engine has been reconditioned?
I'll get it checked out for sure. I've seen another for $1000, just under 640,000kms. If i get that one checked and no worries besides getting the blue slip etc, Worth it?. How much money am I looking at to cover all the expenses for the now,and future, like replacing all things relevant; suspension etc. |

I bought a low km motor from a wrecker in Vic and had it shipped to country NSW for a grand total of $570 delivered.

AU_Carlos88, Don't worry about the kays. Any AU over about 250k on the clock you should be ignoring whatever the kays on the clock say and just purely looking at condition. Just look at all the usual things - how's the transmission, does the diff whine, has it been crashed 9 times, is the gas tank in date etc etc etc

Im on my 5th high mileage AU, an XR6 ute and shes been the best one so far. Had a head gasket done last year but no other major work. Gbox and diff untouched but the gearbox whines a bit more then usual. My first AU had done 470k when I sold it on the original engine and auto box, second had done 560k and was as good as gold but on a rebuilt auto, all up I've done nearly 200k in my AUs over the last 5 years and haven't been let down yet, apart from a dud o2 sensor. I owned Mercedes S class and a couple of 5 series BMWs before my first AU and have no plans of going back.

Yep, taxi guy comes into work and although he's gone over to BA/BFs he prefers AUs and reckons they're not really run in until 500,000

Reckon. AUs were, in every area, superior to the BA's. Except for trans longevity, but AU's would still get 400k out of a box.
