Hi
My sister is picking up her first car tomorrow and we did an online quote for insurance that came back at $3k. We then did a quote with having the insurance in dads name and having on the policy a nominated driver under 25 which came back at $1030 a year. Can we have the car registered in my sisters name and the insurance in dads name. Ive heard of it happening a bit but is it ok to do with the registration and insurance in two different names? I think some people dont have any additional drivers on the policy and that is where they go wrong is that right. Any help or suggestions would be great. Thanks Luke

Not so sure about now but when I asked about 6 years ago (long time I know), the owner of the insurance policy had to be at least a part owner of the vehicle.
Car belonged to dad, I was gonna take over it... blah blah... etc. And that was the answer the insurance company (AAMI I think) gave us. You should just give them a call and ask.

i am doing my insurance on my first car tomorrow and contemplated that.
im sticking with 3rd party and fire and theft which from aami will cost me $310. to my knowledge if i own the car it straight away puts the cost up. where as it was in my dads name it would be cheaper but if they work out that i actually own the car we will get screwed over and not get any insurance. plus in years to come when i get insurance in my own name ill have a rating 5 or something cause i haven't had insurance before. so it stuffs ya then as well |

We tried this a couple of years ago (through an insurance broker) . but the companies he deals with all said the car had to be insured in the registered owners name and list the under 25/21 drivers . Ended up pretty much the same amount as the younger drivers , even with 3rd party wasn't any cheaper .

Should be ok but you will get additional premiums on top of your existing the younger the driver.
Eg: Std premium-$500 Additional premiums males under 21-$1200 femals under 21-$900 males 21 and under 24-$600 femals 21 and under 24-$300 Drivers 24 and over but licenced under 2 years.$400 Should go something like that. |

My car is registered in my Mum's name for pensioner rego and insured in my name, because I drive it. Registration is not proof of ownership. My Dad has drummed that into me and he knows all. A receipt is proof of ownership. That being said I never got a receipt for my last car because it was leased and I still managed to sel lit oK.

Thanks for the replies. Just to let you know how it went. We got the policy in my sisters name with parents as drivers and an under 25 driver on the policy and got it for the $1000 instead of $3000. And its still in her name which is good.
Cheers Luke
