There is no warrenty left on it. It will not charge the battery and it also won't boot with just AC connected.

1. Have you checked that the power pack/transformer is working? Sounds like a stupid question but I've had mates who had broken wires between the power pack and the plug into the lappy.

2. It could be the fuse in the lappy.

there are fuses in computer these days? well user servicable ones?

if the battery wont charge and the comp wont turn on even when plugged in, check the power pack with a multimeter (any needle inside the pin and one on the outside, if theres no reading then thats stuffed) if there is a reading then its the 'power pin' inside the lappy itself, this happened to my sisters laptop and it will require a new motherboard ($600ish)

otherwise get a quote from someone else.

and test to see if the pin inside the lappy moves if so then the above is correct and its throw away unless under warranty.

Yes i have two power packs and both are showing the green light and the cables are not damaged in anyway.

I was thinking that where the power packs plug go's into the lappy in may be damaged there. More than likely its the power module on the motherboard thats stuffed, it is expensive and that would just be my luck atm. :(

Yeah i think your on the money, i will check the power pack with a meter though.

The laptop is approx two and bit years old and owes me about $2300 so i will most likely get it repaired.

Problem with computers these days (paticularly Dell's) is that they are cheaper to replace than bother fixing an old machine

Is the jack in the laptop in good condition? I've had similar problems before with acers and found that wigglying the jack can sometimes work....then its a simple fact of soldering the jack again.

True and thats the cherry when your looking at these types of laptops, price.
To be completely honest the unit has been dropped twice onto tiled floors and also had drinks spilt onto the keyboard on a couple of occasions too.

The specs it has can be bought now (from dell) for about $1400.

When the power plug is connected to the laptop there is quite a bit of movement from the jack, so it could be the problem.

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated.

Another problem with alot of older laptop motherboards / and some desktop motherboards , i have found a large majority of pc's not charging or even starting up these days (if its not the power pack ) / due to dodgy capacitors used on the motherboards , the laptops are real bad for this problem on the capacitors around the main cpu. Usually you can tell if they are suspect when they start buldging at the top and like a black crusty formation builds up on the top of them. If your carefull you can replace the capacitors yourself no worries ( just need a fine soldering iron and a magnifying glass ) , usually its the capacitors around 1000uf and above that start causingproblems as they get old. This problem can cause a dead pc and stop laptops from charging too ! . gl .

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I agree with the above. We had over 50 desktops from Dell that used dodgy cheap capacitors and had to have their motherboards replaced.
