Car customization - Do it yourself?

Hello, i got a question

It aint an intelligent car question but bear with me.

If someone know how to work/build stuff with metal would it be possible for that person to be able to customize their own car?

Say... Design their own custom scoops?

Most scoops and body kits are made out of plastic and/or fibreglass, except for main panels...

Fibreglass you can do youself....

if think anything can be done by someone who knows how...or someone with patience
though everything has its rules and regulations so just check on what size, shape, material, etc something can be and where it is used...
oh and anything structural must be done by engineer or have engineers cert something like that
thats all i know

I installed my own stereo and saved myself $700 in installation, it only took me 3 hour to do.

I saved my self $770 putting my stero in the origanal quote was $1000 supplied and fit. i done it myself for $230.

i do 90% of the stuff to my car.
doing interior retrimming at the moment.
fibreglass is easy to work with too, made my own bodykit

Doesn't matter what car I have, I will always pay someone to do any work because, it's their time to muck around with it, and if they stuff it up they have to fix it for free.

My brother has the same mentality and also has no money to spend for that reason!
He even rang me up to come and change his tyre because he had used up his RACV visits limit. the boy just has no idea.....he must be adopted!

The only time I EVER pay some one to do it or take it to a mechanics is when I have no idea what to do and no one I know can help me either.

yeah as most people on here have said I do 90% of the work on my car myself, I believe stereo installs are the biggest $$$ waster... closely followed by $500 oil changes. (within reason of warranty of course)

I dont see why making your own body kits, or fabricating scoops would be a problem however as FALCONSR said there maybe rules, regs regarding height, obstruction of view, protruding edges etc..........

but some of the bodykits getting round on Lancers....... i doubt ADR's apply :P

There's lots of things you can do yourself .....cheap!
I remember a long time ago National Lampoon Magazine did an article on building your own hot rod for under $100.00

Some of the things they did to build the "Super Chicken" out of a 77 T-Bird
were to use rain gutter down spouts as side pipes and stealing the lid from a Mcdonalds garbage can (The one with the springy door) and using it as a hood scoope!
It looked pretty good when it was done...at least more then a hundred bucks worth

What can a person possibly do while installing a stereo system for $700? I've always handled all my own stereo systems, as well as everything else, except I did have a friend rebuild an 8" for me. As far as stereo installs go, an orangutan can do it. Don't be afraid of the unknown, find out what it takes. It's simple but may be time consuming. Have patience.

If you can do sheet metal work then by all means give it a shot. You may come up with something new and original.

The reason I can't do this is because if I give it to someone else to work on then I have no control over how the work is done. No one else will care as much as I do about how things are done because it isn't their car. As far as getting something fixed for free that means they had to screw something up, and that is what I don't want to happen to my car. After all, are you really getting something for free? Did you originally pay them to mess up something on your car?
