very interested to know what people think i should do . we are going for a holiday to port macquarie. i have 2 cars one el futura on lpg in great condition it does high kms as i use it as a work car . the other is the ba gt . it is used on weekemds and day drives also my wife drives it to work and it is in showroom condition .
should we take the gt on a holiday and worry about where it is parked etc etc . or just take the futura as it is just as reliable and cheeaper to run and we can park it anywhere we want without having to worry. what would you do . or what do you do if you are in similar circumstances . thigs i think of are . the gt is safer. also easier to speed and get caught . a worry to park anywhere and road wear like stone chips etc etc. the el is no worries on any of these points. |

the way petrol is going...
stick your GT in the garage. lock it up, take the keys. and drive the EL. and, on the drive, the EL will be more comfortable with the softer suspension and 15/16" rims

Take your EL. And I'll take care of the GT for you while you're gone :
On a serious note, take the EL.

Id take the EL, though i must admit there are some nice roads up that way which would make the GT tempting, but pratically id take the EL. I wouldnt want to see my GT covered in chips, especially considering the roadworks around foster and besides EL's arent that bad.
*Im betting that 98 octane would be near $1.60 in Port Maq as well.

Why have a GT to just sit there, did you buy the GT just to keep up with the Jones, I take it the GT is insured, I was once like you are mate, very affraid to take my XR8 places because off this but now I really don't care, after this last week when I had a very realiable and nice vehicle written off by no fault of my own, I've now decided to drive and enjoy my vehicle's while you can, if your that affraid off parking it than you have to ask yourself the question, is the vehicle really needed, it's a holiday, take your GT, enjoy the drive and the time away, otherwise you will never enjoy life if you worry to much, it's only a vehicle, they can be fixed or replaced, as long as you have insurance, enjoy your time.

I hope you originally bought the GT 'cos you liked driving it .. so drive it! It's a new car, so you can still get parts (thru insurance if required). Way things are going V8s won't be worth anything anyway, so might as well enjoy them now!!

A) You should have insurance to cover of you of any mishaps
B) Why buy a nice car if you're going to hide it? It's not a rare car, it's mass production etc so it's not going to save you squillions by leaving lesser kays on it C) From how it seems, you bought the car for recreational purposes (ie. weekender) - how is the holiday any different? If you're worried about stone chips, get a car bra

If you own a GT, fuel isn't really an issue for you otherwise you wouldn't have bought it in the first place. Buy a car bra and take the GT, or, if you do want to save some money, take the EL.

Take the gt as there is nothing better than driving a drivers car when you are away.
We take our turbo xr6 every where and would not think of driving any thing else. no matter what the fuel cost the pleasure and comfort you get driving the gt will far out way the el. Ian

You sound like my solicitor mate who bought a Porsche to drive 6 kms a day to and from work. When it come to an interstate holiday he catches a plane!
While your away your shed might burn down or terrorists might nuke Sydney, so take the friggin' GT and live it. JUST DO IT! |

Cripes!
To me this is a "no Brainer". The GT, like most of our local hero cars, is a poor investment compared to other options, if thats what you bought it for. My problem is not should I drive my girl..... its finding time to do the other non-essential things like... sleeping, eating, working, etc etc. Peter

Enjoy your car.... take the GT.... I agree with the others you didn't buy it to be an ornament so drive the freaking thing. Besides as lovely as the EL's are they are nowhere near as comfy as your GT and you know it.
Scratches, dents etc can all be repaired.... Besides the GT is bigger, your wife can pack more clothes and shoes - which lets face it, is the more important issue here. Stop being tight and take your FPV on a holiday. Cheers, Tori

I agree take the GT, when it all comes down to it, it is only just another car (more expensive than the EL granted). Drive it, enjoy it and have a ball in it. I'd love to have the oppurunity to be able to take a GT away on a driving holiday, I'll just have to make do with the XR8 if it ever arrives from the factory...

the name says it all really
Grand Tourer Take it, enjoy it. i had a similar proposition tonight, take my v8 LTD to Melbourne in peak hour traffic, or take mums 1.8L laser... even though the Laser is cheaper to run, easier to park etc. the LTD is my car, and its a driving car. Go warm up the GT now. Its is just a car after all

hahaha thanks for the replies guys. still unsure . its not petrol its not an investment . i't isnt even really stone chips .
it is just things like having to find a car space wide enough and far away from shopping centre doors while on holidays , driving on a gravel trail to go fishing, and people who key them just because they are there. but yeah it is just a car for driving. but the el is a car too which i wont even look at or notice a door dent from a kid in a car park. but the gt will be more enjoyable to take, man i'm getting more confused. |

Getting a ding in it is going to happen sooner or later, there not much you can do to stop it.
And when it does happen, just accept it and move on. You dont live in a perfect world after all. I also see where your going with this though.. When i leave my car at home and take the Mrs Swift out, gloves come off and i have a little fun... Care factor = ZERO

Hire a focus. You'll wonder how you ever did with out one. :
If it was me, I would take the EL. Especially if your off to the beach. Not sure if you have kids, but wouldn't be fun to get sand in the car

If you're not planning on driving on roads that may be too rough for the GT, I would take it over the EL.
These sorts of cars are built and bought for such travels and I for one look more foreward to a holiday as you could spend the weekend/week in a car you love driving, especially a V8!. You will have to show restraint on the speeding side of things but the cruise control on BA's is so user friendly, and it's also not to say you wont get a ticket in the EL. |

Driving in a straight line doesn't really constitue enjoying the car in my books. Leave the GT in the garage and take the EL. If the budget allows hire a car... a few years ago myself and a few mates hired a lil pulsar to go to Adelaide - we drove the balls off the thing and had an absolute ball as we didn't care one little bit for it. Stonechips? chunks missing out of the tyres? worn clutch? dropping burnouts and handbrakies does that! :hihi: best $400 we've ever spent

probably up for a flame here but after talking to the nieghbour who travels by company car up there regularly , he says take the el. he has scratches and dings all over his ba. he says expect stone chips on front bar and windscreen due to extensive road works . his mate came back from coffs harbour yesterday with 2 decent stone chips on the windscreen.
