Connecting new HardDrive...??

Ok Fordfans Im in need of assistance.
I have recently bought a 160gig h/d for me comp as the old one is full and is only 40gig.
Alrighty, i have set the new onto slave i believe and have connected the power and ribbon cable.
So what now?
If i go into my computer its doesnt show up as me other "C" drive does, If i go into control panel, system and Device manager it shows up underneath the original drive but how do i store stuff on it, there seems to be no dramas nor is there a yellow exclaimation mark

click start, then run, then type in diskmgmt.msc and click ok

Find the new drive in there and creat a partition on it then format it. a wizard may pop up, may not.

Did you change the BIOS settings to tell the computer that it has a new drive to look at?

is this the same as;

control panel -> administrative tools -> computer management -> storage -> disc management

thats how i did it for my other hdd

how would one utilise the 40 gig h/d for like windows xp pro programs and the like, and just leave the other for pics doc etc...

If you have the drive setup correct you should see both drives in 'my computer'
Just copy as much of the junk ie pics docs etc. over to the new drive.
Save everything to the new drive from now on.

Initially I thought this might be a compatibility issue, but as I read down the posts it's all sorted and seems it all works, but one thing for others sticking newer larger hard drives in older computers - check the motherboard supports drives of that size. My mate has an NForce2 motherboard with an AthlonXP 2500+, so it's not that old but it supports a maximum of 120GB only - with no further BIOS updates available. At the time of his last hard drive purchase, we were looking at getting a 160GB drive - had to downgrade that to ensure it was supported.

WinXP needs SP1 to enable the OS to see larger than 120GB drives. FAT32 file systems allow partitions up to 32GB. You need to use the NTFS file system to allow 32GB+ partitions in XP

If you have a problem with the OS not wanting to recognise a large HDD because of hardware limitations or whatever try going to the HDD manufacturers website as most have a small downloadable utility that lets you trick the pc into accepting the larger harddrive.

If both HDD's are set as Primary Master you would be lucky if the pc started at all.

garenteed it wont i will just display a message saying it cant find any operating systems. in an ideal world you should try to make both the Hard drives primary on their own peice of ribbon( if you know what i mean) rather than have them as slaves. this may or may not be possible with how the hard drives are sitting in the tower ect but thats how it shoule be.
