Advice on new job

G'day all, i just got offered a job (my first actually) and i need some opions on it. Ive been talking to my parents and friends, but still, the more advice the better i believe.

The job is as a door to door salesman (dont flame me

: ) with an internet company (prefer not to say who, but if u are wondering just pm me). Basically its like this. I get 100bux per sale, and need to sell atleast three per week. But oviously, the more, the better it is for me.

The few concerns i have are
1. There is no base, so can i make, or rather are enough people willing to purchase to give me a sufficant income
2. The long hours for the money if times are tough
3. Any violence that i may encounter on the job

What are your thoughts on this

I wouldn't really call that a job unfortunately.

1) I doubt you will find people all that receptive to door to door internet sales.
2) good fitness but!
3) see point 2 when you run away from said thug.

Unfortunately it will be a method of income, are they asking you to set up your own business and pay yourself, do your own tax accounting or are you on their system?

get yourself a nice cruisy office job for $20 an hour with a ground coffee machine.

100 bucks per signup is ok, but how competitive the prices are will be the determining factor on how easy it is to sell.

Things like

Modem supplied
Line activation fee
Contract Period
Download limits and if it is capped or slowed

We are a reseller for Eftel and find their prices and service to be very good.

Remember customers are spoilt for choice when it comes to ADSL.

There is nothing wrong with straight commission work, but a few questions to ask would be

Is the product a good reliable product, would i use it myself and does it offer value for money.

Secondly if you have answered yes to all above, do you have very good comminication / presentation skills or if perhaps a little down on these a good mentor to teach you.

You need to relate to anyone anywhere anytime.

To be successful you will need to work 5 minutes longer than the next guy.

Security, yes many to look for, the first is if does not look or feel right in most cases you are right and avoid the property.

rattle the gate a little before entering a property and wait to see if the family monster dog is tucked away.

leave the gate open if you have to open it so if needed a hasty retreat can be made ( dog again )

As far as is it a job there may be many opinions to this, mine is if you are any good in sales it is best to work on 100% commission ( so long as it is good ), only people who doubt thier ability will require a retainer.

In most cases i would earn 3 - 5 X the average wage with this setup and enjoyed every minute.

It doesnt take a special person to succeed in this game but it does take that extra yard and when you see others complaining around you just try a little harder to get that little bit better the next time, as with life this is no different your mindset will in most cases controll the outcome, mine was simple " i will outsell all that come before me (other sales guys)" thats not being big headed it was just my mental prep. but as above i would not even waste my time selling any product that i did not believe in, or did not provide a good return for my time

No. I wouldnt take it. Then again I hate sales (or straight out at least) work with a passion.

Door to door sales would suck. You're trying to flog a product to people who didn't invite you to give them your sales pitch and probably don't want/need your product. Very few you actually talk to would be a chance of a sign up. That's if the deal being offered is any good.

Most people see a sales person at the door who has just interrupted their time at home and immediately are thinking of shutting the door. Some would be polite and others would be ......blunt

i've tried to get someone working for me door to door, but its a bit much to ask. Personally i hate door to door sales people knocking on my door, so i have a sign in my window, I also dont want to portray that "desperado" image for my business that a door to door sales person has.

It can't hurt to accept the job, and look for a better one at the same time.

perhaps doing a letter drop - namley a buisness card and a Short letter explaing what your buisness can offer, that you dont get an angry NO! *Slam!* and only people who are genuinlly interested will call and invite you in to hear more.

or

might i suggest wearing some chain mail under your clothes to protect you from the dogs.

I have worked with many D2D salesmen (no I have not sold D2D)

I have watched young hopefuls being trained in rooms expecting to make a million bucks.

most give up within 3 months

You need to very thick skinned (especially if you knock on my door).

Know your product (not just what they tell you in the training room, as the will only teach you the positives)

Find the person who has done this work for some time (who appears to be doing well out of it and get them to take you under their wing)

Be positive, against popular belief people will trust a D2D salesman if they get the opinion that they are honest (have seen it hundreds of times).

I also have had the customers say how wonderful a particular salesman is and also how much of a creep the thought another was.

First impressions count so make it good.

And most of all dont park your new XR8 in view or they think that your makeing to much money.

Some things I like about a job;

1, Security of employment
2, Satisfaction
3, Reasonable pay for effort
4, Did I mention security

That job would not have any of the above, maybe the pay. I hate door to door sales people. Tell them nicely I am not interested, then not so nicely if they persist.

I would look for something a bit more solid, maybe do this short term for some cash....
