Default Buying a K100RT Bike

Hi all.

Thought i'd let you guys know (especially bike fans), i'm buying a BMW K100RT roadbike this afternoon. Does anyone have any experience with these? Any known issues with them? I'm not exactly very bike minded if you know what I mean. I'll see if I can post up some photos of it. :

Cool! Is it an ex-cop unit? What year?

AFAIK, they're very bloody reliable, but it's entirely dependant on their service record.

I had a K1100LT for years. Super reliable except IT EATS BATTERIES when it is sitting in the shed bored. Ride it a lot or you will be forking out $120 every 6 months or so.

Was also quite heavy so I dreaded dropping it. Other than that it was very easy to ride long distance although it always did 140km/h regardless of how you turned the throttle. i.e. Sit on 100, look away, look back 140, slow down to 100, look away, look back, 140, speed up to 160, look away, look back, 140.....

You will LOVE it.

By all accounts they're a pretty reliable bike, I don't think they handled the rigours of Police work too well, but they're a good cruising bike and as someone else said, very reliable.
They're no sports bike but a great tourer, and shaft drive, makes a big difference, no messy chains and sprockets to worry about.
Just make sure it's had a good mechanical inspection.

I have just ordered one of the new F800ST's. Twin cylinder with a belt drive. 3 to 4 month wait on delivery though. I have heard stories of the K100's doing 200,000 plus MILES with no problems. You will love it!!

Very nice toy but make sure the gearbox fix has been done, they get a bit heavy to push after the first 10km......

All the new bikes have been rectified, a cush drive is installed. All the earlier bikes have the mod done at their service...... or when the customer complains.... All is good now......

If the bike has been maintained well, you should get many more miles of motorcycling pleasure out of it. There is a well known problem with early K100's with the output shaft splines wearing too early. Other than that they tend to have an annoying buzzing/vibration right at the touring speed of 105 - 110 kmph, so you tend to tour at 95 kmph (annoying) or 115 kmph (illegal).
Hope it all works out well for you.
Regards Bob

Jaycar have a great charger that you hook up when not in use and just plug it under your terminals to keep the battery charged without affecting battery life. Works for mine between track runs.

Thats the only problem with beemers, you cant hear the buggers.

I bought an ex police K100RT 1987 model in 1989. Great bike for cruising and carrying books to TAFE.

Stripped the rear drive shaft at a roundabout at 70,000 km.

It was an ex bike instructors bike that spent a lot of time with its front wheel in the air!

They go forever, very easy to service yourself except for the shims for valve clearance.

Gee I'm tempted to get another one, my property settlement goes through in 3 weeks.....

I rode one once, and found the front end dived a lot under brakes. Go for some fresh fork oil or that with some progressive springs.

I've heard like the others here about the gearbox issue on earlier models, but it's probably been fixed.

They will go forever and are very comfy to ride.

I ride a VFR800 myself.

All the best with the purchase.

Well . Thats all I can say. Its awesome. I can't fault the bugger except its a heavy . Went for a ride when I picked her up, and all weekend and I gotta say, this thing just cruises, and handles good for something so heavy, and when you open it up, still pulls reasonably well (really well) Only a couple of probs.

1 - Bit heavy.
2 - Rear brakes don't do compared to the twin piston brembos on the front.
3 - Has a tendancy to speed. You look around, to make sure no one is going to wipe you out, feels like your doing 50, look at the speedo and it'll say 80 lol.
4 - I found muscles again, that very obviously havn't been used for a while. When i got up on sunday i felt like I was a gorrilla hanging off a tree all night.

Other than that, I don't regret the $6000 spent on it at all.
I'll get some pics, when I find the camera

well i've got problem 2 worked out - looks like I'll need to replace the disc and pads on the rear of the bike. I just hope it doesn't cost too much. Anyone have any ideas on how much a rotor / disc + pads will be for K100RT?? Where do I even get spares lol?

$485 for a genuine rear disc. And the ***** thing isnt even slotted or x drilled, its just a solid disc. If you guys know where to get parts, i'm all ears (eyes) at the moment

There is a BMW wrecker in Sydney that is very good with prices. They advertise in Australian Motorcycle Trader Magazine.

cant speak for Australia, but when i was living in the UK, there was quite a few specialist BMW wreckers/parts suppliers who were pretty good with pricing and aftermarket parts/upgrades

if you want a laugh, try asking for the price of a set of rear mufflers for an R65LS
