Default Trade plate

G'day all,

Can anybody in SA get their hands on a trade plate?

Even just for one night. I Need one to get my fairlane out to see what it drives like before I pull it to pieces for a small resto.

Cheers.

In Victoria you can buy a UN-Registered Vehicle Permit which allows you to drive your car when its UN-REG on the road.

You can buy if ro 7 days or 28 days.

Your supposed to only drive it from place of purchase to your home or to drive to a licenced RWC testing place or to place of repair for RWC.

Has a limit on the times when you can drive it, between 7am and 7pm so no late night cruises..............

You used to be able to use a trade plate instead of rego in the old days, but the coppers have cracked right down on it because some with an unregistered car were using it as a daily rego just to give the old beast a run.

Now some of these cars were not quite roadworthy and posed a danger(apparently) to other road users! the owners of the trade plates were facing big fines over the mis-use of the plate, so these days its mainly restricted to new car sales. Best off going to service SA and getting a daily permit which costs you about $20 and its all legal for 24 hours but you still have to state what roads you will be travelling on!

I would get a permit, but the car has no plates at all, and has been off the road for 2 years in NSW and never registered in SA.

I Don't think you can get a permit in this case.

Thats why you get a permit, as your car is UN-Registered........

Thats also why it is called "UN-Registered Vehicle Permit", no point in getting one of these permits if your car was regsitered......

Dont make me look up the RTA in SA and find it.................

He cant use a permit without some form of rego plate.
If they allowed that he could speed past a camera and not be identified.
He must have plates displayed even if from NSW.

In March we drove an unregistered XY ute from Lockhart to Narromine with no plates, needed a pinkslip and the permit. Very good way to move an unreg car if it is roadworthy. Much cheaper than trailer hire. NB This was in NSW, not SA

I bought a VH SL/X 4.2l from a car yard late on a Friday arvo, was an ex NSW car and hadn't been over Regency yet.
The yard told me i would be ok to drive it without plates as they had obtained a 3 day permit to see me over until the Monday morning.
They used the old NSW plate number on the permit slip but had disposed of the plates already.
I got pinched by some cops on N.E. rd for not displaying plates on the Sunday night and was made to organise a trailer on the spot.

Info for SA is here: http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/permi...ered/index.asp
there's a pdf application for you can download there.
Note they say for a "specified reason".
"vehicle inspections
mechanical repairs
relocating the vehicle
car rallies. "

"You need to bring

Plate number of vehicle (if it has one)
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and/or engine number
Type of vehicle
Make of vehicle
Reason for permit
Specified route
Specified time for the permit "

I'd say you would apply for a permit to road test the vehicle for mechanical repairs. You'll need to plan out where you intend to drive it. The actual restrictions on where you go are applied to the permit.

Im from SA, bought car in vic. Owner of car wanted to take plates to vic reg. I drove car from melbourne to country sa NO plates. Wondered about the etoll on freeway in vic, rang them and they said if its a once off no dramas as they could never get a car with no plates. rang vic coppers and they said as long as you had a permit for relocation of vehicle there is no drama.

Got pulled over for speeding on way back to SA in vic with no plates and copper didnt care as I had a permit. No plates, No worries as long as you have a valid permit.
