Keep or Sell your classic Ford

Lots of people here have beautiful older Ford's worth a fair bit.

My question is do they "have a price" or "not for sale"?

Reason I ask is my Uncle has an EH Holden (I know not Ford) he's had from Day 1. Immaculate. One owner.

Regularly gets offers (last was 35 from a random collector) and he refuses to sell it.

He said he'll keep it until his end. His health isn't great but money and car doesn't even enter his mind.

Are yours the same, your car, or a price will get you?

It's actually a serious OP.

My Uncle has cancer battles etc but the idea of selling his car is completely "off limits".

Says house goes first.

I can understand.

Grandpa didn't buy it new, I don't think. But it was a 'new' car when he got it, and he only stopped driving it after grandma died in it (heart attack). It's nothing special or rare, just an XM wagon, 170 with Fordomatic.



Got passed on to mum/dad, and then on to me (which was the ultimate intention anyway).



Sitting there, ready to drive at any time. Gets taken out very occasionally. I'd have gotten offers if those wanting to make them didn't know the back story.


It'll get passed on to whichever kid will appreciate it the most. They can stick it in a museum if they want, but don't sell it. No need to sell it because while we aren't rich, we don't need money like that for at least a generation or three. Might even get passed on to my nephew who got on great with grandpa and I know he'd take good care of it and not need to sell it to get by and would have enough attachment to it to not idly let it go.

The flip side to that is the central banks have printed such an incredible amount of fiat currency in this emergency (Fed balance sheet just hit 7 trillion, Australian QE) that if it gets beyond all the holes in the levee they are trying to fill, it will flow into asset classes like classic cars...

Your uncle obviously does not need the money so he might as well enjoy himself with his pride & joy to the end, good on him!
I'd most likely do the same with some items I have.

Well he doesnt just part with EH yet end of story. (may have to change)

No he isn't wealthy but it's his passion.

I talk with him and money never is raised.

It's just my EH will be handed down, no sale whatsoever.

I was thinking of this scenario this afternoon, I saw an old bloke driving this XR Falcon ute along, original late 60's paintwork. I was wondering how many offers he'd had to buy it.

No one has offered to buy my Fairlane, though, and the Sierra doesn't see the road enough to be noticed.

On a serious note, I don't know what I will do with my cars. My kids are not that interested in them.

I know that they are only AUs, however, while my son likes the XR8 and even had the XR6 ute for an extended period of time and loved it I don't think he has the passion to keep them when I move on.

The daughter has absolutely no interest in cars whatsoever. I can't make it any clearer the lack of interest she has in cars. If you were to ask her what she drives she would have to think about it and even then may not be able to answer you.

If I was to live beyond my active years and moved into a nursing home where would they be stored? They'd probably be sold to pay for my aged care, yes, I know, the amount I'd get for them would probably only buy me 30 seconds.

So, at this very moment, I wouldn't sell them for the world but sooner or later it will be something that I will have to think about. I'll let 70 year old PG2 deal with that in 20 odd years time, current PG2 is going to enjoy them.

I've never really kept a car that's not just an appliance for a long period of time, I tend to chop and change my weekenders every 1-2 years.

I'd never be in the position of owning a 'classic car's just because I don't keep them long enough to become classics

There will be forced sales, but at what price? Since deregulation in tne 80s there has been so much money and credit created that has mostly flowed into housing, with some going elsewhere. We have already seen that flow into collectible cars, with stupidly high prices even for unrestored wrecks.

Like houses, each dollar now buys less house and less classic car. A ponzi scheme suppprted by ever growing gdp, population and lending to increasinly marginal borrowers. Ezi rates to buy stuff we dont need, with money we dont have, to impress people we dont like.

Like most assets, timing a sale is dificult. A potential seller may not see their car as an assst, just something that happens to be worth a lot. So the decision to sell may not be terribly rational. Forced sales certainly arent.

Anyhoo....the other point is that i keep hearing of potential buyers that will swoop on bargains. Wont happen for most. If there are forced sales, they will have been influenced by wide ranging events that affect many people. Mass unemployment, closure of whole industries, etc and a change of social mood.

As i wrote in another thread, there is no point in bagging a 'bargain' if it means putting your own finances at risk. Job loss and business failures happen.

Conspicuous consumption is out, frugality and minimalism in as the baby boomer retirements look increasingly unaffordable. Less cruises around tbe pacific, more motel stays in regional areas.

Keep or sell, then? Up to the individual. Id be suggesting sell if it eases debt load. Maybe thats just me. Others may have more risk tolerance.

My Typhoon isn't a classic and won't be one for quite a while, but I don't want to sell it. I've held on to it when when I moved overseas at great complication and frustration at times. Now I'm back it has a nice big shed all to itself. And my kids are just starting to get interested in cars and my eldest has just started saying things like, can I drive it when I get older, can I look after it when you can't drive anymore...

That being said, the best intentions have to change sometimes and I'm under no illusion that family and security for them comes before my personal toys. So yes I would sell it, but as my wife has said many times, we'd try as hard as possible to keep it because it means so much to me... And now maybe even to my kids.

My old xdub is worth triple what i put into it dollars wise, but i don't care i never plan to sell it. Once its gone i would never be able to get another one. Its just magic after a hard days work surrounded by modern soft roaders and econo crap boxes to roll up the shed door and look at all that chrome, the styling, and listen to the glorious sound.

Couldn't care less if the car market drops in a hole, i have my old beast for my enjoyment not investment

Everything is for sale at the right price. If someone offered me stupid money for my either of my GTs I'd let them go.

my son luckily for me is into cars so his XC and his XR6 will be with him to the end no doubt,
He will inherit my GTE while i'm still alive & knowing him he will keep that too,

As for my GS, AU Ghia, VS ute , Well who knows, Ive not thought about selling them but if I had to sell all 3 to buy a BF cobra well i'd be tempted. But that move would be more due to space than a $$$ need.

There will come a day where they will come only museum pieces, when we all drive around electric (or some other alternative power source), and fuel as we now it ceases to exist. That will drive prices right down. That's still a few gens away though, and guess that power source could be transplanted into an old classic (you can get 350 chev motors with an electric motor in them), but itll still drive prices down.

The Escort is my keeper, its been in my life longer than I've been without it. The oldest niece has always been interested in it, from a young age she's always asked questions about it and has done countless laps up and down the driveway steering it whilst sitting on my knee. I'll teach her to drive in it when the time comes and it'll be hers when the inevitable day arrives.

The TD Cortina is a little different, I've had some good offers on it, ones that I should really of taken but money alone won't buy it. She needs to go to a good home that will care for it in it's original state. When the time comes I'll be looking for the quality of the home not the size of the monetary offer.

Everything has a price. I have at least three times as much money put into engine, gearbox, diff, stereo etc than what my NL is worth.

But it’s at that age where it’s not old enough to be cool, and not new enough to be in demand.

I don’t drive it enough though. It’s fun to drive but drinks like a fish. If the money was right i would sell it. But i know my 10 yr old son wants to have it some day. Loud, cranky v8’s will do that to a young kid though.

That is almost word for word how my Uncle speaks.

I know different cars worth different amounts, but the "worth" in terms of value is completely irrelevant.

The "worth" is what it means to him not the market. In fact I don't think he has any idea what it's "worth" just that it's his and will become his sons.
