Hi,
Have any of you noticed the smart School Zone signs flashing red circle at you while driving past them (outside school hours). The one I have noticed doing this is at Churchlands WA in the 70 zone, and I may have been doing a couple of k's over at the time. The circle of red LEDs part of the sign doing a brief flash as you approach the sign. The signs are solar powered and has an antenna. Just wondering if these signs have built in speed monitoring, and sends you a red 'blip' only for those going a little over? Perhaps also sending statistics back to someone. Cheers, |

Now i dont know if it is the case, but its not a bad idea really. Not telling you speed but just that your over i think is great. In my mums area they have in known places digital speed signs. For most, and for myself who needs my licence to facilitate my job, if im in my own world looking at the road and doing 5 to 10 over i will back down. Often enough coming up to those signs the mobile speed cameras put theyre signs before and sit behind them. Reason being pretty simple. Those signs say your speed. And they have created more of an issue with the 1% who want to set land speed records for those sections of road having a readout. So just a light to say your over if thats what that light means as opposed to a number i think is a better idea. If people are going to speed theyre going to do it anyway, but given a number, the odd few are going to use that to compete against themselves. Having a school aged child, as annoying as they can be, i respect school zones. Kids dont often think past the ball that has gone on the road and thats exactly why school zones exist.

Theres one in Point Walter WA that does the flashing 40km during school times then tells you your speed for the rest of the day and gives you a happy or frowny face.
It also picks up vehicles traveling down the fence line of my golf course. Best I've had out of the old tractor so far is 43km/h

Haha ironically doing something that stupid in the tractor I still got a smile. It was out of school hours.

Here on the Gold Coast local areas get them, smiley face or frowny face. They can rotate them to different streets and this last month they had Santa hats on. I have never seen a red school sign flash out of hours though. Not a bad idea though.

I had a brief search on Bing, and found all these:
So it is confirmed that many of the sign manufacturers now offer a built in radar option, and offer built in data-logger for speed and quantity of all vehicles passing the sign on a 24/7 basis, with 4G network and remote programming possibilities. http://www.adengineering.com.au/prod...it-signs-vsls/ https://voxson.com.au/radar-led-signs/ http://www.elwc.com.au/speed-activated-signs-plus/ https://safetyproducts.com.au/produc...ed-sign-solar/ The actual type used for school zones in WA isn't exactly in the brochures above and could be from another manufacturer, but must be the same technology. The last few days I've been past a couple of signs, and very clearly it does a quick 'blip' of red circle if you pass the sign doing for example 73km/hr in the middle of the night when it is 70 zone. (I never speed when school zones are active so can't tell you what it's doing then). Cheers, |
