Default 2020 Ford F-250 / 7.3 V8

No power and torque specs yet, but the video on the 7.3 engineering is interesting.

I wonder how the size compares to a 5.8W EFI. And wether it will be made available as a crate engine.

Ford rep mentioned big block proportions and in particular, bore spacing to ensure cooling between cylinders.
Seeing as it's being built in the Annex plant at WINDSOR, that would be a fitting name...

Excellent video, explains why a larger engine is able to stay in 14.7:1 stochimetric mixtures under load
where smaller atmo and boosted engines would need to run with much richer mixtures....

These trucks run mostly loaded or towing heavy stuff, so in situations like that,
cylinder deactivation would be useless and turbo engines would just drink fuel.

I always just assumed all petrol engines were always able to operate at stoich at any rpm with any level of load. l learned something new!

Did the engineer just insinuate it's turbo ready? Seems like the important parts are turbo spec.

Waiting until we see this motor in a Mustang drag car with a couple of turbos strapped on.

Bore x Stroke = 4.22" x 3.96"
Now the hunt is on for bore spacing and Deck Height.....

Something interesting with regards new 7.3 V8 versus 1960s FE engines,
427 = 4.23" x 3.78"
428 = 4.13" x 3.98"

The old hot rodder trick was to take the 427 block and use a 428 Crank
that made 445 = 4.23" x 3.98"

But..... It'd have to be one of the few (If not the only) current Petrol Engines with Piston Coolers..

Correct.
Apparently when the engine steps up to Medium Duty (F650/F750), a lot of extra durability
is required to pass the sustained loading tests - stainless steel valves, piston cooling jets
cooling water spaces in and around the cylinders is critical in that application.

14.7:1 under load is that perfect position between 16:1 light cruise and 12.7:1 full power mixtures.

High school maths would put that at 443 cubic inches then. I thought the bore spacing was 4.5” but I could be wrong on that.

I'm a little surprised by that. With so much focus being on lower engine speed performance and fuel efficiency, I expected an undersquare bore/stroke

The answer is sometimes less obvious...
There's a juggling act going on and I suspect that it was easier to design the
engine to fit into Ford's existing range of commercial vehicles including the
cut away E Series vans and their cramped doghouse (cab over the engine).

An E series, similar layout to a Transit, or a Merc Sprinter is NOT a cabover, it has a short bonnet and engine cover.
Please do not refer to it as cabover engine.

This F, as in most US F series looks good. A real pick up truck with a proper wheelbase designed to lool lop down the highway towing. hats off Ford US for listening to your prospective buyers.

The F series would nearly qualify as a COE.. (maybe)

The recommended method to R&R an engine in one, is to Lift the Cab Off..

It's really not that uncommon. Among both performance engines and heavy duty ones. Especially turbos.

Good news to see a ground up redesign of a large capacity V8 in this day and age where everything is less cylinders and turbos - interesting they've gone OHV as what was the last OHV engine Ford was producing? Windsor which they stopped using in the USA in the 1990s?

OHV with variable valve timing is interesting, GM has the same setup.

Wonder if they'd sell this as a crate? Wait until someone slaps some turbos on it

I reckon it would be smaller width wise than 5.4L/5L OHC engines.

Anyone want to guess power figures? I'm guessing 300KW/650NM out the box.

Powerstroke diesels are still ohv.

I would hope for a little more, that's only a modest bump over the 6.2l. With lower revs, power probably won't be that much higher but I would think with 7.3l capacity they could get torque closer to 700nm. I guess the V10 it's basically replacing is only 239kw/624nm.

In F250/F350 pickup form, for 2020 I’m going with 330kw/690Nm I could see them wanting to reach for 440-445 hp and 500-520 lb-ft. I think the chassis cabs will have a little less. Maybe around 380-400hp/470-490 lb-ft. (So in metric, I’ll predict 285kw/650Nm for F250/F350 chassis cabs).
