Default All fossil-fuel vehicles will vanish in 8 years in twin ‘death spirals’ for big oil and big autos

Do we believe it?

http://business.financialpost.com/tr...g-the-industry

Quote:
No more petrol or diesel cars, buses, or trucks will be sold anywhere in the world within eight years. The entire market for land transport will switch to electrification, leading to a collapse of oil prices and the demise of the petroleum industry as we have known it for a century.

This is the futuristic forecast by Stanford University economist Tony Seba. His report, with the deceptively bland title Rethinking Transportation 2020-2030, has gone viral in green circles and is causing spasms of anxiety in the established industries.

We are on the cusp of one of the fastest, deepest, most consequential disruptions of transportation in history................

Of course Kim Jong Un and Trumpy Dumpy may make their prediction come true even earlier if their attention seeking behaviour means they start WWIII.

Yep it has the single (30 year old) pipe line has sprung a leak , after reviews in 2005 ,2012 told them it was inadequate .....she'l be right mate

the funny thing theyve been squawking in the media about the jet fuel yet it supplies all of aucklands petrol and diesel (mostly) ....wait till the Aucks cant drive in to get a latte the s#$t will hit the fan

interestingly when they put the pipeline in back in the 70's if they had made it an inch bigger in diameter they would have doubled the volume ....once again she'l be right
so your right ....we probably wont make 8 years

Half the oil tycoons have 3 million dollar petrol powered mid 60's Ferrari's in their sheds.

''No more petrol or diesel cars, buses, or trucks will be sold anywhere in the world within eight years''

LMAO.

No doubt this will happen, the question is when.

Thinking 8 years might be too soon though, due to the current and future investment in existing technologies.

There will also need to be new, non-fossil fuel based plants built to generate the electricity to power everything, which will also take time to complete - once how they are supposed to work has been figured out.

There are plenty of manufacturers working on petrol and diesel cars now that won't be on sale for another 8yrs.
It does sound like something a university economist would say though.

This is where the EcoLPi Falcon comes into play and is a crying shame it's not being built anymore.

Still burns cleaner than most petrols and diesels and at least in Melbourne anyways the pump prices are cheap as chips.

If only Broadmeadows made an EcoLPi Wagon or Territory i would be set for life.

Yeah, the front trailer on your B double will be for the batteries!!
Maybe in Europe but not the distances outside the metro areas of Aus.

Good one CoolBFWagon !!! I agree & and wish there was a LPG car/SUV being built.
The trouble is that the radical element of the greenies want everything to happen yesterday- before infastructure for the changeover is even operating. Take a look at the Electricity situation - shut down the power stations before there is a viable alternative operating that will cope with demand.
I have always thought that we will need a phasing in period of at least 15yrs where Lpg being 'greener' than most would be able to play a vital part.

I'd like to see an electric powered aircraft though, will battery technology get to the point where an aircraft could run without fossil-fuel, and potentially charge the batteries with wind currents or solar panels while cruising at altitude?

Not in 8 years.

Saw recently how someone has invented technology to turn old car tyres into oil. There must be billions of used tyres lying around the world.

Develop it further and it could be our 2nd source of petroleum.

So why the bloody hell are they phasing it out in every state except Melbs.

They took away the rebate, and that's killed the LPG conversion industry but it's the cleanest burning fuel out of all them!!!

Just DOES NOT make sense to me.

Aircraft are further away than anything else. They have a few unique obstacles, such as you can't electrify jet engines, propellers don't work at altitude and weight is the big killer.

I'm sure someone like Burt Rutan will come along soon and build a battery powered light plane (its already been done with solar) but you wont be jumping on QANTAS anytime soon and flying to KL on batteries.

That's part of their agenda - they want everyone to be equal for a plethora or reasons. Sorry, but nature doesn't work that way.

Already several battery powered light aircraft. A quick play on YouTube will show what has already been developed.

Low payload and low range are the big problems. There needs to be a HUGE leap in technology to make electric air mass transport a viable option.

Doubt we will see it for another 30+ years.

Eight years? More like eighty when you really think about it. I'd suggest someone has been spending far too much time talking to the fairies at the bottom of the garden!

When I was younger my father told me a story about how an electric engine was developed back around the 50's and it was such a success that the petrol companies bought them out while it was still in its infancy, and buried it. I'm not sure if the story is actually true but I'd heard that it was such a threat to the industry that they were prepared to pay for the technology so that it would ensure their own industry's progress without competition from a better product.

With all the buzz about EMdrive perhaps it's not that far away. EMDrive is the engine that creates thrust without propellant, supposedly defying our current understanding of physics. Last I'd heard, the device was being sent to space for testing but that was a year ago ...

Car manufacturers are still developing the next generation of gas and diesel vehicles.

The article is probably at least 22 years out.

How on earth would we recharge EV's in outback Australia ?

The market will decide it. Companies like Tesla aren't huge right now, but they will be once they manage to develop the tech even further. Also depends on the price of fuel. Look at what happened in 08- 09 when the price of oil and fuel prices spiked. The whole world noticed, consumers were already beginning to change their buying habits, demand for oil actually fell, OPEC blinked and they haven't allowed the price of oil to spike so high ever since.

What's going to happen to all these used batteries, from all these electric vehicles. Do we stockpile used batteries like we do tyres.
They really should be concentrating on alternative fuels for the internal combustion engine if you ask me.
