Default What are some of your favourite movies?

Hi lads,

Last night I watched Erin Brockavich for the first time since I was a kid. I remember when I was younger I didn't really like it but watching it as an adult was really nice.

I guess it made me think about films and how often we can watch something for the first time, not really get into it and just ignore it in the future...

Another film that I didn't care for much at first was As Good as it Gets (Jack Nicholson), I watched it with my dad as a kid and he loved it but I just didn't understand. As an adult it is a much nicer film.

Another film I watched last night was Brokeback Mountain. I must admit, I have to skip some scenes because they make me feel uncomfortable but honestly I think its one of the best films ever and I would be lying if I said it didn't make me cry. It's really great and everyone should watch it.

Another film I didn't understand at first was "Downfall" which is a WW2 film. At first I didn't understand it because it's in another language but the more I learned about history, the more it made sense to me. It's really great and everyone should see it at some point.

Another film I'll talk about is actually a tv series. It's called Generation War and features a really nice song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6JzS0hlcCM

I watched that series after Downfall because it kind of got me hooked on that kind of movie.

Another film I really like and watched this week was Pulp Fiction. Everyone should see it, I have watched it so many times but every time I laugh and enjoy the experience. It really speaks to me and tells a lot about the people that watch it. I remember I watched it with 2 different ex gf's. First gf loved it and totally understood the plot, second gf actually didn't get it at all. She also didn't like star wars. We broke up because we couldn't relate.

The last film I'll talk about is Gettin' Square which is an Aussie film. This is actually one of the best films I've ever seen. I remember I went to see it at the Cinema with my dad when it came out (2003). It is so great I can't even explain it with words, has some of the greatest aussie actors ever. Watch this film and you will be very happy.

I watched all these films this week after work or whenever I had free time since the weather has been so bad.

What are some of your favourite films and why do you like them?

The random absurdity of 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' made it one of my favourite movies along with 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail'. The Nutty Professor and Norbit movies from Eddie Murphy still crack me up...

I think at the moment, 'Guardians of the Galaxy' would probably get my vote with 'The Book Thief' close behind...

Can you explain why you like those films? I have seen the Rocky Horror picture show, didn't care for it too much but I can understand why some love it.

My favourite:
* One flew over the cuckoo's nest

Other favourites:
* Terminator 2
* The Green Mile
* The Shawshank Redemption
* The Jason 'Bourne' films

Many others as well, and I have to admit publicly that I have become a fan of Di Caprios films of late, just his recent ones, although 'What's eating Gilbert Grape' was good

Yes, definitely some great films there. Di Caprio is an excellent actor. I remember watching his speech at the 2016 Oscars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOoP56eXtzM

I was watching at my parents house, we were not really paying attention and then he made this speech and it hit all of us as profound. He wasn't afraid to speak his mind!

He was very good in Blood Diamond and just about everything he touches turns to gold.

edit: skip to the 2 minute mark of his oscars speech to hear when he changes tact. I liked it because he made sure the broadcasters couldn't shut him off by making it half way through his speech before he made his point.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a better actor than Di Caprio. Considering how many films he's been in and how diverse his acting is - only De Niro (not his late movies) would be on that same page. Russel Crowe would be close.

Agree 100% on all points. Master and Commander is another excellent film (Russell Crowe). Taxi Driver is also a work of art. De Niro is just great.

if I go looking for a film, I look at the actors and that will determine if I watch it or not

Actors like:
* Freeman
* Di Niro
* Hackman
* Crowe
* Sharon Stone
* Di Caprio

(you get the point)

I agree. Another great actor is Brad Pitt. At first I didn't like him but the more I have watched his films, the more I appreciate his talent.

Clint Eastwood is one of my idols though, him and Arnold Schwarzenegger. I watched Escape From Alcatraz last week and it is one of the only "prison" films of that period that really has the ability to be watchable today.

A great film I watched recently was "Cross of Iron" by director James Couborn. It was probably one of the best WW2 films of the 1970's and still stands up today.

A film that might surprise you is "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" (50 Cent). It is actually very good and I recommend watching it. Sure, there is some typical gangster type stuff in there but it's actually watchable.

Vanishing Point is another great film. Both the original and actually the remake is reasonably good too.

If you're into thrillers, 28 Days Later must be seen.

If you like action films with some great drama, "The Town" (Ben Affleck) is a must see. It is still one of my favourite films. I have seen it so many times I can't count. Seriously you must see it.

The World's Fastest Indian is also a great film, especially for those that love to tinker with motorcycles. I have seen it a number of times and even wrote a report on it in school. It's a great film that must be seen.

I actually change my mind, the Hurt Locker is very good. I like the lead actor in it but some of the political scenes in it don't make sense to me. Therefore any film of involving that kind of political background usually should be avoided if you want historical accuracy.

Gran Torino (Clint Eastwood) is one of my favourites. Defiance (daniel craig) is also very good but the historical accuracy isn't quite there.

Schindler's List is also unmissable. Ignore the politics and just watch the acting, it's rather enjoyable. Solid actors and a great "plot".

and a true story adapted by a book written by Australian Thomas Keneally (book actually called Schindler's Ark)

Also, I rate Hanks as an 'up there' actor

Sharon Stone is a great actor and not just for 'that scene', she is quite happy to push her to limits beyond a 'good looking blonde'

There are some classics that I can watch over and over again. I am a sucker for senseless action. Predator, terminator, lethal weapon, die hards etc etc. However, love ninja/martial arts movies and was watching the most brutal ones at a young age, however, I was doing karate from a young age also. Used to love American ninja ha, jean claud van damme, steven seagal. Also love a good thriller, along came a spider, silence of the lambs, dragon. But I also cant go past a quality comedy, especially ones that don't have a huge budget because they rely on the comedy and story, billy madison, happy Gilmore, grandmas boy, but also Kevin Smith movies like mallrats, clerks... Im actually not hugely into big budget blockbusters like avengers etc, but looking forward to watching the 2nd ninja turtles movie tonight. I like Stephen Amell as arrow, although not hugely into the serious. I think he'll make a bad *** case jones

Guess Im really just not into boring feel good movie

Lake Mungo ... Australian mockumentary psych horror, utterly brilliant, you'd swear it was a real doco by the ABC
Acolytes ... another Aussie horror
Donnie Darko Director's Cut ... has to be the directors cut, it just makes sense, the original just doesnt
Let The Right One In ... swedish vampire movie, remade by Hollywood but doesnt compare to the original
Hey Hey It's Esther Blueberger ... Aussie coming of age teen comedy/drama
2:37 ... Aussie drama about teenage suicide, Teresa Palmer's first major role
The Bothersome Man ... Norwegian dystopian drama
Jade Warrior ... Finnish/Chinese co-production in the crouching tiger hidden dragon vein

Ferris Buelers day off. Best movie ever. But then again Iam old.

Running on empty was good when I watched it at the drivein. But now seems a bit average

" maybe your mum will lend you her car". "Still snatches second" "spotto a 57 Chevy, a blown 57 chevy".
"Looks like a hot one foxy". "Don't burn the snatch Kev"

You wouldn't think I have only seen the movie 50 times.

The good, the bad and the ugly, there is actually two other movies attached to this one.
