Default Qld Govt "speeding advert."

This latest gross waste of taxpayer money by the Qld Government on a mass media advertising campaign that suggests a father is going to kill his daughter by "speeding" at 65 kph is just a blatant attempt to make empty head drivers believe that booking them for driving 3 kph over the limit is saving lives and therefore in their best interests.

Easy, test your speed against a GPS and just don't speed.

We all know the true facts about speeding and road tolls, but another fact is that the government will do all they can to make a buck and speeding drivers make them a lot of money. If you don't speed then the government doesn't win.

And here in Victoria it's becoming more apparent every year that the government's alleged "war" on speeding is failing to make any difference to our road toll...

To 7 April 2015, road toll = 71 deaths
To 7 April 2016, road toll = 81 deaths

This represents an increase of more than 14% which makes a mockery of our speed laws and limits.

Last year, in a three-month period, a single speed camera location at the intersection of Warrigal and Batesford roads in Chadstone (SE Melbourne suburb) raked in more than $4 million in fines. Figures on the Department of Justice’s Cameras Save Lives website also showed more than $83 million in fines were raked in from all Melbourne's speeding and red-light cameras over that three-month period.

The Victorian government now uses a projection of future camera fines to help balance its budget; the money going into consolidated revenue rather than new roadworks and maintenance.

Quoted for truth.

I know that nasty piece of road in Chadstone. It's opposite a TAFE college, full of foreign students with absolutely no road sense. At least I'm sure that's the excuse govco uses to justify the speed camera placement. As a result a few hundred meters of road including the Batesford Road intersection are a permanent 24/7 40 zone!! No wonder it's the nanny states most profitable speed camera. It's a major North/South thoroughfare but these days I avoid it entirely and use another route.

These days it feels like more and more people are driving around below the limit, but I feel like I am jumping on the brakes and laying on the horn more and more often.
There are much bigger issues than people doing a few over the limit.

What I have found is that I am having more difficulty changing lanes on the freeways, especially moving into the left lanes in plenty of advance of the exit ramp I am going for. It seems that pretty much all the lanes are travelling at pretty much the exact same speed and not opening up gaps to move into. Traffic just doesn't seem to blend now, it just seems to be one giant blob of cars.

I have actually had to overshoot exits and take the following one.

The whole driving experience has changed, and not for the better!!

The most disgusting is the Calder fwy exit city bound on western ring road, VIC. DicRoads/DicPol have placed a speed camera 200m before the exit, and since everyone is travelling at exactly the same speed in fear of another camera 500m ahead underneath a flyover bridge, the only option is to brake to a dangerously slow speed and cause an accident or miss that exit altogether.

Yep it's pretty terrible driving on city streets these days. It's never been brilliant, but over the past year or so I have really got fed up with it.

Perfect example was 2 nights ago driving on a road with 2 lanes my way, I am surrounded by cars doing 65 in an 80 zone even though it was 8pm and traffic was not very busy. I was trapped so I just went with it and followed the herd.
Then a mobile speed camera sign appears and I see a sea of brake lights in front of me. We are now doing 50 in an 80 zone. Oh I felt so safe driving around these brain dead morons.

Few hours later on another similar nearby road, almost the exact same thing happened. Group of cars doing around 70-75 in an 80 all slam on the brakes because of a mobile speed camera sign.

I dont know about you other guys but lately I have been getting frustrated with the amount of people walking on the road. There is a perfectly good footpath there and they choose to walk on the road. I was coming home a few afternoons ago and had to wait for a family, pushing a pram with kids in toe to walk past the front of my place before I could park my car, There is a concrete footpath out the front of my place!!! The only reason I could think of is that the footpath is only about 1.2 metres wide and the family couldnt all walk side by side. This isnt the only case, I see it all the time. Why arent they policing this as Im sure it would help with road safety.

QLD roads are bad, you have people walking in them 3 & 4 abreast, the lycra brigade and up here trains, level crossings everywhere. The car driver, who pays for them in rego, fuel tax, tolls and fines are mostly deemed in the wrong when there is an accident. And I always thought roads were for cars.

Even my little 90 year old mother who was visiting us recently was yelling at the TV "Then look both ways before crossing the road!".

Love the message that if a car hits you at 60kph you will be perfectly OK, but it the driver is going a few k's faster, you'll be dead.

The public isn't as stupid as the government thinks. People generally see right through ridiculous road safety advertising.
A couple of past examples spring to mind.
In one, about watching out for pedestrians, someone steps straight out from between parked cars and gets hit by a car. No suggestion the car was speeding, but given normal human reaction times, if someone stepped out in front of you a few meters away even at 40kph you wouldn't even get your foot on the brake pedal before you nailed them.

The other was a short-lived advert which showed a guy go past a speed camera on a country road doing 112kph or something low-end like that. He keeps on driving. Fade out. Fade back in and he is approaching a sweeping bend and he drops a cassette he is trying to put in the stereo. Bends down to get it, drifts across into other lane, head on smash sound effect.
Fade in to hospital bed of guy wrapped up and his wife hands him a letter. She says angrily "This came for you in the mail". It's a speed camera fine. He bursts into tears and says "I'm sorry", and she nastily says to him "Tell that to his family".

Everyone saw the immediate flaws in the logic of it.
First, if it had been an old fashioned cop pulling him over instead of a hidden camera in the bushes (which lets you speed on and not slow down), the accident wouldn't have happened.
Second, if he had been doing 100kph and did the exact same thing and had a head on, the other guy would be just as dead.
Third, how much later in the day did the accident happen after the radar caught him? It certainly wasn't instantly...it was implied to be "later on". Was it an hour away? Two hours?
It was withdrawn quickly because everyone was talking about how ludicrous an advert it was.

Hopefully we see a short run for this stupid advert as well...

Police are also getting sneaky...I was driving along the highway a couple of weeks (first weekend of the school holidays) back coming back home and was in a line of cars behind another Commodore sedan wandering between 90 and 92 by my GPS...pretty steadily so I take it he had his cruise control set. There was a car in front of me, and then the Commodore. Behind me gradually accumulated a line of cars, maybe ten or more. I started looking for a place to overtake...it was annoying. I had places to be, and didn't want to hang around smelling the roses, and on a long trip someone in front of you doing 90 is annoying as hell.
The car in front of me turned off at a side road off the highway, and then I was stuck behind the Commodore. It seemed to be forever waiting for the next overtaking lane. I was about to just plant the foot and overtake when I noticed something...the dark window tint and pair of little LED lights inside the back window either side of the car. It was an unmarked police car...
Sneaky sneaky...obviously just baiting people to overtake, and as we all know, you aren't allowed to speed even while overtaking...

Quotas to fill?

Ambush people, trip them up on the smallest infringement and apply the maximum penalty. Welcome to the new normal.

We used to joke about that subject years ago. Guys used to say "The speed limit it 100kph, but there's no law saying how fast you're allowed to get there!".

Well...actually..."furious acceleration" or similar stupid terms mean that really, there kinda is...

Rego and fuel tax go into general revenue. Tolls go to the tolling company. In some states, fines go towards road safety initiatives.

Up to 30% of fuel tax goes into federal road infrastructure and road repair

You've completely misinterpreted it. TAC are aiming for zero brain cells. Judging by their moronic policies, they're close to achieving their goal.

This is true. Feels like every few months a road I drive on regularly will have it's limit dropped. On these roads suddenly mobile cameras and police are a daily occurrence even though when the road was at it's 'dangerous', higher speed limit you would never see any presence of speed limit policing.

But last month they dropped the limit on a road that already has a fixed speed/red light camera. I guess they wont have to pay HP or MSC operators overtime to earn some extra revenue this time.

It is strange society we live in the ads make out every k over is a killer .Then you get the police on the news up here saying your house will get broken into .Hide your keys in your bedroom and if someone breaks in and asks for your keys give them to the thief.
seems to be doing a few kms over is far worse than being a thief

I used to regularly drive along an outer Melbourne road with a posted limit of 100km/h. They(?) changed it to 80km/h without any changes to the roadway, new housing, or the surrounds etc. Anyway, I didn't even realise it'd changed until one day my infrequent passenger said, "ferk me, look at that, a lower limit". I dunno how many times I'd driven along that stretch of road 20 kays over the limit LOL.

So... how can a road be considered safe at 100 one week, but only safe at 80 the next week? Doesn't this prove the revenue raising claim is true?
