Default Does location determine car choice?

I've been pretty set on buying a Renault Megane RS early next year, as they get rave reviews and seem like a lot of fun. However, I've recently picked up work in the Shepparton area, and has me considering the worth of having a Megane in an area where all the roads are pretty straight, I can't think of anything with plenty of bends.
Currently it would be great to have a Megane, as I'm only 15 mins form Kinglake and those wonderful roads. But when I move up country I'm not quite seeing the point of it when the roads are basically long straights, at least for having a Megane RS.

So my question is, is it worth having something like a Megane RS which loves bends in a place that doesn't have many?

If it floats your boat just to open the garage and see it everyday and fulfills your transport requirements then yes, why not!

If it makes you feel good do it, nothing sucks worse than regret.
By the same token a nice test drive in a megane along your long straight road might be a good thing.

My colleague owns a Megane RS in Canberra.
There are plenty of freeways above 60 km/h like Ginanderra Drive if you go to Google Maps.
If I cared more about bends and less about space and power I'd get an 86/MX-5.

I take my XR6 Turbo from Sydney CBD to country gravel roads all the way to the NSW south coast.
The real major concerns about location is either cleaning soot or bugs off and the type of drivers out there.

I had my name down for an XR6T Sprint but after moving house my daily commute now includes dozens of hairpins along twisty mountain roads, including ice and snow in winter, Sprint was idea was dropped and a smaller AWD took its place.

I drive 8km to work and back on some of the busiest roads in Sydney.
A Toyota Yaris would make more sense for me, but the XR6 still puts a smile on my face every time I open the garage door.
I'm still just as in love with it as I was the day I brought it home 10 years ago.

You could look into any car clubs around that might have some track days, or an autocross club, and join in some of their events. That way you still get to have some fun in it, not in a straight line.

EDIT: It's a shame we don't have as many tracks as somewhere like Finland, as I have friends over there who regularly take their daily drivers to track days and throw them around. One of them is one of the best drivers I know, and one of only two people I'd allow anywhere near the drivers seat of my car without reservation.

Biased here because I'm on my 3rd RS hot hatch, 2nd Megane RS, and I love them to bits. Simply, they're an awesome car no matter what the road is doing. They're not known as the quintessential long way home hot hatch for nothing

Join up over at Ozrenaultsport Australia if you need any more info. Even if you're in Shep, you'll find something (Mt Beauty, Hotham, buffalo etc are all just up the Hume aren't they??) close-ish by.

Enjoy.

Like others said, if you like it, buy it.

On the general topic, the type of car's I'd run if back in WA are completely different to the ones I run in SE Australia. Very different road types despite similar interests.

Of course location determines car choice, I was living in Sydney and used to drive a BF GT, when I moved I got rid of the GT and now drive a 4x4 and a XB Ute for local stuff and on week ends, my work car is a HiLux.

I will be back into a GT or similar when I move from here I will still be cruising the XB Ute on week ends and some work days.

Only if I have to move to a dodge place where I would have to leave the car in the street or near the station etc.

Would buy something that is really undesirable, under powered, cheap to insure 3rd party with and cheap to buy - but reliable.

Then paint it yellow....

Roads might be straight, but you have to turn from one straight road to another. That could be fun.
If I were you id buy the Megane.

What floats your boat should determine your car choice.

Why buy anything else unless budget / priorities lie elsewhere.

I've been in the OP's position. When I've never had to use my own car to get to work (all long highway driving) I've used that time to have fun euro hatches and coupes. When I started highway driving again they just weren't comfortable enough, safe enough or practical enough to use so I switch back to large sedans.

If you mostly drive long straight country roads you can of course use any car you like. In reality Megane RS will do it easily but it is not what is designed for. I would pick something with big engine ,soft suspension and long wheelbase because I prefer comfort to doubling corner advisory speed limit these days.

That's your opinion...

The HEADING says "location", not "Does living in Shepparton...."

Having a Renault where I live would be a problem for services.
Hell, having a Falcon is a problem....so LOCATION does matter for some of us.
But YMMV.

Location can determine car choice. For instance remotely with high speed highways to travel frequently, you would want a big comfy car to gobble up the km.

If stop start, a fuel miser.

Logically yes location plays a role, we have moved to Bowen from Brisbane and now I am not to sure where I will get the C4 serviced.

I actually made sure that I got the major service done a tad early before leaving as I wasnt confident with the people around this area. Which is harsh but I dont know them. We have a Toyota/Mitsu dealer and Mazda..thats it. Holden and Ford are 40mins away and Citroen is 2 hours away.

I think I will take a punt with Toyota when the time comes....but these days its really not hard to get information and most cars are pretty standard so anything within the boundaries of normal repair shouldnt be a hassle.
