Since when has the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux been call a Truck in Australia? As per large billboard here in Geelong and also TV ads.
I'm sorry to me they are either a dual-cab ute or 4x4 dual-cab ute. Am I the only one opposed to this obvious Americanisation of our car market? Is this the future of the Australian car market? |

I thought it started happening when soft 4WD's began being called SUV's. I just hope we don't start hearing coupe's being called 'coops'.

I like how she says something along the lines of "you might find a cheaper truck, or a bigger seller, but not a better one!"
Yeah? http://www.carsales.com.au/bncis/det...D-871108/?Cr=0 http://www.carsales.com.au/nearnew/d...16036030/?Cr=0 http://www.carsales.com.au/nearnew/d...15863470/?Cr=0 http://www.carsales.com.au/nearnew/d...16036664/?Cr=0 There are 4 "better trucks", ones even your own damn product! That can work the wrong way in advertising in Australia where the term truck is used negatively to describe an SUV that drives like a truck, that is foul-handling and unpleasant to drive. Ford made some advertising milage out of that when Territory was released, comparing its car-like driving qualities to the competitors' "trucks". Ford in Australia should be the last ones to use that term.

SUV terminology came from marketing strategies to build "traditional" American large, usually V8 powered and inefficient vehicles outside the CAFE rules in the 70s. Came from Jeeps, Broncos, Blazers, Scout, RamCharger, etc ... The colloquial term "ute" is an abbreviation of "coupe utility" and does not fit any vehicle which is not based off a passenger sedan; i.e. F-series, Ranger, Colorado, DMax, Triton, Ram, etc ... |

This is the reason why I call my Triton a truck and my old Falcon ute a "ute". When the final Falcon and Commodore utes come of the production line the ute is dead.

You are worried about the "Australian Car Market" diminishing and turning American Stealth00 when you proudly displaying the Nissan logo?? You sound like all my Holden supporting friends that call me when a Commondore wins Bathurst,.........just after they wash and polish their Hyundai!!

I known it's being a bit pedantic, but the Falcon AU/BA/BF/FG ute, is not really a proper ute either. The last proper Ford coupe utility was the XH. The last Holden ute will probably be the current VF.
As OzJavelin has said, 'Pick-Up' is a yankee term, as is SUV. We really need more Aussie words for those 2. At least truck sounds a bit more Aussie, than pick-up. Dr Terry |

Read any newspaper when a one tonner ute/tray has a crash.
It's usually "Truck crashes into xxxx"!! It sounds bigger and tougher than "Ute hits tree".

Yeah we know you hate every "truck" that's for sale in the Australian market, we see it in every thread lately. Now post some links to trucks that's people earning twice the average australian income can afford. These American utes are in a different class to every ute sold in Australia. And cost anywhere from 2 to 5 times of a new dual cab ute sold in Australia. Paying 6 figures for any ute is absolutely crazy and would never do it while they cost $50,000 tops in the USA |

They, the yanks, have been making cars longer than we have so the terms used are based on what they say. Makes sense doesnt it, we stop making them and we lose the ability to call stuff what we want.
A ute IMO is a sedan/wagon based platform not some farm equipment like the Hilux's et al

Look around. It not just the car market. The last few Prime Ministers have been the Presidents lap dogs. Soon we will all be called Cletus, and chew straw. If anything the car market is predominantly asianised.

Yep, the Aussie thing is the 'coupe utility' and the most 'coupe' were XA-C utes, with the coupe frameless doors, comfort focus, and heavy options choices. These have nothing to do with a dual cab, or a 'truck'. Americans did pretty good versions with El Caminos and Rancheros, too.

most of you blokes are talking out your ****!
if your going down the paddock to take a drum of fuel to the header, you throw it on the ute. Falcon ute, Commodore ute(probably break down), hilux, triton, ranger, f100, navara etc, they are all utes if they reside in Australia.
