Hey all, I'm trying to find on Youtube (or anywhere) the race where it was a mongrel day for weather going from rain to shine and back - think it was in the 90's. The rain bucketed down towards the end and there was a massive pile up with the leaders, knocking them out of contention. I think a Skyline won the day and the fans were not happy - they booed the winners on the podium, and the winners arced up and fired back that the crowd were all a pack of assholes.
Year of race would be a great help, also any pointers where I can get it off the net or on DVD. Cheers!

Yep Dick won the race no doubt about that ,they just decided to red flag the race cause poor old Jim couldnt drive and crashed then Dick passed him ,I wasnt happy either that day and it still gets to me .They could have stopped the race before Jim crashed and all would have been fine ,but they waited untill he did ,that is what everybody was upset about

One of DJ's best drives imo. Him & Bowey drove the wheels of the Sierra all day in very changable conditions that didn't suit the little Ford at all. Why they red flagged it was anybody's guess but I remember being on top of the mountain when they called the result & I can tell ya it wasn't a place to be if you were wearing anything closely associated with Winfield or Nissan.
Back then there was some serious passion in our sport & something that is sadly lacking these day!!!

The race was red flagged and you can argue whether that should have happened sooner or later or not at all but the rules are the rules. Jim Richards and the Nissan won according to the rule book.
For context regarding Jim's statement (state of mind) it's also useful to remember his good friend and countryman Denny Hulme had died on the track whilst competing that same day. To then be competitive, crash in the deluge, be awarded the winner according to the rules and then be booed on the podium, well I have no issue with his reaction and would call it toally justified.

But some idiots did not have wet weather tyres and end up crashing, talk about idiots. No one has the right to overtake the winner in the wet ? Some are hopeless in the wet and some that's where they shine. A mate of mine who races cleans up the whole pack in the wet but when it rains they all run and cry we have no hope of competing with him, stop the race not fair prickly pair ! The rule book |

The grip advantage that the Winfield Nissan GTR enjoyed was unbeievable. At times throughout the day when there were rain showers, the entire field would have to come in & change to wets or intermiediates but the GTR's just kept powering on with slicks such was the traction advantage they had being AWD.
In that last storm, Ross & Jimmy brought DJ into the pits for full wets the lap it started to rain while Richo powered on in the Nissan & that proved to be a mistake. Jim firstly hit the wall out of the cutting, then powered on with only 3 driving wheels & the right front torn off and ploughed into the wreck that was at Forest Elbow. While all this was happening, DJ was powering on in the Shell Sierra & overtook Jim while he was in the wall. Track was still relatively clear with a few VL's & Richo on the grass just past Forest Elbow & as Zipping said earlier, not long after they red flagged it the sun came out for the rest of the day. I am not going to have a shot at Richo, he didn't wave the red flag & as said earlier, it had been a very trying day for the Kiwi. Jim will also go down as one of the best wet weather drivers this country has ever seen. Yes he was that good. I think most people would agree on here that #17 should have won that day. They drove the wheels off that thing and like I said earlier, imo the best race I ever witnessed Dick Johnson race. He was brilliant. In saying all that, the Winfield Nissan was always going to win that race! All the controversy before the race had the Nissan threatening to pull out of the race right up to race week. Cams had just put a weight penalty on the GTR's & Fred Gibson was not a happy camper saying he would not compete at Bathurst unless they took the weight penalty off the Nissans. Cams didn't budge & Gibson put more pressure on saying that Cams was doing everything possible to stop his cars winning Bathurst. I would hate to think what Gibbo's reaction would have been if the race had continued with his #1 car out of the race in such contrversial circumstances.

So Dick shouldn't have won his first Bathurst in '81?

Gee......comments about Jim not being able to drive and a fool.....I wonder if you guys were saying this when he was driving for FTR in 2001 when he finished 5th at Bathurst. I'm sure you were cheering him on......all is forgiven Jim. Fact is, Jim is a Motorsport legend and has a very impressive motoring CV.
The times I've approached him at race meets, he's always taken the time to sign autographs and chat about the car, the race track and anything else. They don't call him Gentleman Jim for no reason. |

I disagree!! Jim Richards is a champion, but I must say that WAS Dickys race. it was a farce that they gave it to Skaife and Richards after the Skyline was put it in the wall after Dick passed them and was still running in the end. Like Dick said, he couldn't believe he was beaten by a car on the back of a tow truck!!

DJ, and all drivers, knew full well that the final positions in a canned race, goes back to the last completed full lap. They know the rules, and use them to their own advantage all the time. Stupid if they don't.
DJ just played to the idiots that don't know that there ARE rule in Motorsports. |

Bathurst 1992 was Dick's race, and he was robbed of a deserving victory.
The conditions were absolutely atrocious (I was there), and there was no way in the world an outgoing also-ran contender (Sierra) would have a chance against the all-conquering Nissan GTR. The first of the V8 Supercars were also competing (HRT, GSR, Brocky), and were expected to outclipse all the Group A Holden/fords The fact the DJR Sierra was in contention, and passed the crippled GTR on the last lap, was amazing enough. To hear the stories JB tells of the water sloshing through the rubber-less door jams, steaming up the windscreen with the heat from the floorpan, forcing him the wipe the windscreen with his hanky at full whack, makes it even more unbelievable they were ever in contention. Say what you like about Jim Richards, but unlike Dick his loyalty was to whomever generated the best offer for him at that time. Ford heros are to be revered, and Dick still is the Ford stalwart; a genuine die-hard, & blue-blooded Man right to the bitter end. Put his house and everything on line line for it. Rules may be rules, but a crashed car should not have been allowed to win from its position one lap prior. Don't care if that meant the QLD 500 went DJR's way a few years after that. Bathurst is the only race worth remembering, & it should have been DJR's in 1992. Last edited by Ford17; 14-02-2014 at 09:31 PM. |

Not sure if DJ was as blue blooded as you think, he did race a few model Holden's before getting a ride with Ford. I remember an interview once where he said he wanted to drive for Holden but didn't get the offer.
All in all the 92 race was a messy one, the right person won at the end of the day as rules are rules. My favourite bathurst is the 1993 race. Larry Perkins gave the only Holden engined car a well deserved win and great retirement as the other Holden teams ran the Chev engine. The win was tight - 1st Larry Perkins / Gregg Hansford - 161.0:2:13.13 2nd Mark Skaife / Jim Richards - 161.0:2:13.57 The 1995 last to first of Larry Perkins and Russel Ingall was good too |

Jim Richards is one of the best all rounder drivers ever seen in this country, competing in many classes and being at the pointy end in most. Not to mention his prowess in the wet, hence the title of the "the Rainmaster".
His comments at the end of the race were truly out of character, but somewhat justified. I had the pleasure of doing a few laps with him around Bathurst in the big twin turbo Porsche ( the only car faster than a V8 supercar up Mountain Straight he told me as pulled top gear and it felt like the push in the back of my TE50 in 2nd gear) and it doesn't surprise me that they call him "Gentleman Jim". A truer gentleman you never met !

If you read his autobiography (if you haven't you should its a great read) you will know he started out in a Holden because his old man worked at the Holden dealership. Yes he did a race with HDT and was trying his hardest to sign up with them, but when that fell through and he got an offer from ford, he never strayed, he drove them since that moment. That's what loyalty is. There were plenty of moments he could have given up and gone and jumped ship, but he didn't. He has stayed loyal and that is what matters now.

I will read his book, one thing I do like about DJ is he says what he thinks. When his son first started racing V8s it started raining and conditions were poor. The commentary team interviewed DJ and mentioned the poor condition Stephen had to drive in and DJ said "its wet for every other driver too". I liked that because he wasn't about to let bad weather be an excuse if he failed. |

Need to take some history lessons do we?The track was nearly completely blocked that day and the cars were in a very dangerous spot on the track with no hope of being able to clear them while cars were still circulating, unlike when Richatds was in the wall due to a bad call from himself and his pit crew. Skaife wanted to load his jacket up with cans of beer that day to throw at the angry crowd.Probably a good thing that gentleman Jim told him not to.All hell would of broken loose.

I didn't think my simple question would spark a debate - all good!
I gave up on youtube and went in search of a dvd, all I found were highlights and histories - not the full race. I did find one fella that would burn me a 5 disc set for a small fee + postage. Another bloke would download the entire Bathurst races to a 1tB HDD that you mailed to him. Hmmm, nope. I turned to fleabay hoping for a 2nd hand set. I've found a seller in the UK with some new ones and have asked him some questions about run time, what's on it etc. Haven't heard back as yet. Here's the link: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Bathurst-...item1e77c80bb7 If any of you has the actual DVD box set, does the pic in the ad look anything like it? Details about number of discs and running time would be appreciated as well. Cheers!
