4WD carrying 17 people rolls in outback Queensland
Date August 12, 2013 - 12:59PM A four-wheel-drive was carrying 17 people when it rolled on an outback Queensland road, police say. Charges could be laid over the crash which happened on a dirt road on Saturday about 60 kilometres outside the remote indigenous community of Doomadgee in Queensland’s north-west. It is understood the group of travellers managed to push the vehicle back on its wheels after the crash and continue on their journey to Mt Isa. One woman was injured and eventually taken to Mt Isa Hospital as a precaution. Sergeant Glen Arrold said it was fortunate more people were not hurt when the overcrowded Mitsubishi Pajero rolled. ‘‘It could have been a lot worse,’’ he told ABC Local Radio. He said police investigations were continuing. ‘‘Just because we are out in the middle of the bush, it doesn't mean we can get away with anything,’’ he said. I'm sorry, but as soon as I saw that title and before reading the story, I knew who would be involved.
My nephew enquired about joining the Northern Territory police force some years back (he's a cop here in QLD), and was told some weird facts about road crashes in the territory. They said to him that you will get a single vehicle accident but with ten or fifteen people injured, aboriginals from some community way out in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately it's fairly common. I've heard of it happening around northern Queensland too, but seventeen people...? |

17 adults around 100kg each! No good for the suspension. Great that they didn't get hurt though. Hard times for some people.

I lived in Darwin for many years and almost every time a single vehicle rollover with many people in the vehicle it was aborigines usually out on some dirt road but 17 people there must have been a lot of kids on board

I attended a crash in the early '80s in the Gulf Country of the NT where 11 occupants of the 23 in an XW station wagon were killed.
These sort of experiences were/are common in the north across 3 states and one territory.

We asked him if the engine had actually been called “Seagull” and how that came about. “Actually it was just call “Gull”, because I named it that. Because we knew it was going to poo on everything”. |

Poverty alcohol and being in a state of limbo will probably do that to people.

I'm still stumped how they fitted 17 people in a Pajero.. Or even 23 in an XW wagon.
MIND BLOWN! *Waits for the Aboriginal bashing to start and kill the thread*

The 11 killed were all under 10y old, killed by the adults being thrown around inside as it rolled 3 times & only stopped rolling when stopped by a tree.
It took three of us 5 hours to clean up the whole mess & two days to get the dead out & into aircraft to Darwin. Just two coppers in town, the next closest being Kathrine or at that time Avon Downs.
