A Volvo V60 ad that shows the car in drift and donut moves has kick-started a government review.
The Volvo V60 ‘Panther’ commercial shows the black car demonstrating its dynamic abilities – along with its capacity to carry the big-cat pet in your household. It’s a far cry from the staid Volvo image of years ago, and certainly got our attention. Related CoverageVolvo Polestar tuning on more modelsVolvo recreation marks 85 yearsVolvo FMX offroading truck a dirt loverAtkinson joins hooning Block partyVolvo V60 T5 reviewMore on VOLVO But it also got the less applauding attention – and a round of tutt-tutting – from viewers who complained to the Advertising Standards Bureau, saying the ad “unambiguously depicts behaviours which would be both illegal and dangerous on a public road”. After taking a look, the ASB decided the footage depicted “reckless speed” and “unsafe driving”, and directed that it had to be dropped or the footage modified. Volvo agreed to modify the advertisement, and duly took it away to have any of the bits cut out that might be deemed to alarm the complainers. In other words, the exciting bits. “We took down the offending video and put up one that complied with the regulations,” Volvo spokesman Oliver Peagam says. “It was a version of the Panther ad, but we edited and removed the elements that were causing concern. There were cuts of sequences that showed things like the car going sideways.” However the Panther ad, plus the recent Suzuki Swift ad that showed some equally spirited driving, were among those that have sparked a review of car advertising’s current self-regulating code. Over the next six months, the Department of Infrastructure and Transport will examine the code, how it is interpreted and how the ASB handles complaints about car advertising. Peagam says the code currently acknowledges that advertisers can make use of fantasy, humour and exaggeration in commercials, which can be used to produce exciting footage that fits with Volvo’s changing image. “Volvo is unlikely to return to the staid image of previous years,” he says. “A return to the old days doesn’t fit with the way the brand is developing and changing with new models coming through – and the new audiences and new demographic of buyers that are interested in them.” http://www.carsguide.com.au/news-and..._sparks_review My comment : enough of this nanny state attitude..

Begs an interesting hypothetical.
If FPV releases packages to turn your average GT into a track weapon, and that is its only intended purpose (like the SVT offerings in the states, down to a drag strip ready, non street legal Mustang), are they only allowed to show it doing 50kph on a straight rd? What a sad world we fought to keep free...................

Lucky they didn't show it, cause hundreds of Volvos drivers would go out and try to replicate it. They road toll would soar.
The nanny state saves us from ourselves, thank god. |

Yep. Can't have ads like that.
Suzuki got canned for their Swift ad as well ....the one with the little swift drifting around the multi level carpark. What we need is more murder movies and crime series on free to air TV and free porn on the Internet for our kids....that's a lot better than those silly Volvo ads we're exposing the public to.

Pathetic is the only word I can think of to describe the sad lonely people that have nothing better to do that complain. It is also the word the best decribes the people that listen to and then feel compelled to act on the handful of complainers.
I saw the ad quite a few times and though it was quite good. I have also just seen the revised version with slowed down footage and the cuts made to the skiddie bits.

Its sad that people need to stoop to a level that they complain about a little harmless fun, and as for the people who are trying to remove words from the dictionary, why are you looking them in the first place.

I saw the ad a couple of times and I basically predicted this to happen...
How are you supposed to enjoy life without having fun and being happy? Of course this doesn't relate entirely to this ad but the ad is a great example of how everything is all about safety... If you get injured then its your own fault (yes there is exceptions) |

In keeping with the theme, the spectator filmed advert for the upcoming Focus ST. Dare say this may become another victim.

And yet if you want to sell milk you can have Commodore utes going loony. Maybe that's how Ford and FPV can get some good ads? By selling shoes

I saw an ad for Mentos where it has a valet stealing the last spot from his mate by doing a 180 handbraky into to spot, in a Volvo wagon.
How is that different ? The rules are ridonk.

A few years ago, after A Ford or a Holden add, can not remember which one it was, burnouts donuts and such good banned.
It was either the Ford add on the salt lake or the Holden Storm Ute doing donuts causing a tornado came out, these laws came into place. It basically bans anything that glorifies hooning to be banned. I do not see a problem with this, if Ford or Holden had to cut the adds so should any other car make. |

Can't show a cars attributes, yet, you can have adds suggesting if you buy a specific lawnmower...you'll have time to "cut your neighbours grass"...
Yesh! Imagine all the grass being cut!
