As part of the strategy, the money raised from speed and other cameras will be put into a new Community Road Safety Fund, rather than into consolidated revenue.
At least the money is now going into defined road safety an not just government coffers.

Mr Gay said signs warning motorists of the cameras would increase in number and in size, to stop the "entrapment" of unsuspecting drivers

Signs saying, speed camera ahead....what are you gonna do?
a) slow down
b) completely ignore the sign
c) go get an eye test

In that new 500 'high risk locations' most of them sure do sound pretty vague about the high risk areas are that need to be saved by cameras.

Can it really be considered one 'location' when there's 4 suburbs listed on an arterial road? I've never seen a car accident span 4 towns. At least when the last lot did this they listed the accident stats for the spots they wanted the cameras didn't they?

Also, thank goodness they included spots with large speed limit changes but where I don't recall seeing accidents like the Princes Hwy in 'Heathcote, Waterfall' (one location). Ah and then at the bottom of the list we also have Waterfall, Princes Highway. Geniuses.

Well I hope this at least means they're buying more Territories... Or maybe something bigger so they can cover "Gosford, Lisarow, Narara, Niagara Park, North Gosford, Wyoming" (one location) all at once.

I'm ****ed off about this whole safety camera thing!

We were lead to believe with a fulse premise that cameras were being taken down because they were not effective.

“The premier indicated, with my support, that if we found that cameras in the state were not fulfilling a definitive road safety role, and were just seen as a revenue raiser, they would be removed,” Mr Gay said, as reported by AAP.

“The report indicates that 38 of the 141 cameras in NSW are not fulfilling that role – their primary role is revenue raising.

“As of this morning, I indicated to the RTA that those cameras are to be turned off. We indicated they would be removed and, as we have time, over the next month, we will remove those cameras.”

I dont know how many were actually removed but as far as i remember the m4 under the cumberland hwy was one i was told by the net but the list im looking at now does not show that but the one one hume hwy burwood is and im sure is still there i do pass that area quite frequent. If so how many that were to be shut off and removed are still there and even worse are still working?

“It’s fair to say, on average, speed cameras are effective,” Mr Achterstraat said in a statement.

“But unfortunately we don’t live in a world of averages.

“My audit has shown that some of the speed cameras are highly effective, some are reasonably effective, but some don’t seem to be very effective at all.”

We dont live in a world of averages will i think we do, now due to averages we even if you are a safe driver or heaven for bid have amomentary laps in decision run over the speed limit you now have a much greater chance of a fine!
In that last statement were the word effective is used you can replace it all to easily with the word profitable for my liking.

To have 38 apparently removed and not put in a profitable oops i mean effective area but not just put those 38 or even a couple more, but to nearly quadruple that amount is just total revenue raising, otherwise the fact that a lump some of cameras leeds me to beleave a lump sum $$$ is needed.
Would these areas they are going to put these so called safety cameras have a camera there already? Were they not an effective/profitable area before?

Now with these speed/safety/mobile/redlight or what ever they want to rebrand them with are called they want to raise a vast amount would -

Mr Gay conceded the measures would raise extra revenue, but he said the government would ensure it all went on road safety.

"This government for the first time will ensure money raised from speed, red light and point-to-point cameras will go directly towards improving road safety," the minister said.
I have been noticing lately how good governments are at putting these raised amounts and dont feel overly confident with this being any better managed !

"The NSW government has a responsibility to reduce death and injury on NSW roads by getting motorists to slow down," he said.

If they are trying to look like there is a duty of care they have got signage they have statemens of intent to do what they say they are with the already amount of cameras that are about. The only duty of care i can see is there duty to care about profits!

Come on how about not biting off the hand that feeds them!

Safety cameras do save lives.
They installed one in a suburb near my house. Little bit later a truck rolled over at that intersection. Nobody was killed. I say the camera is what saved their life.

Before this truck roll over I had never seen a serious accidents at this intersection. Just fender benders.
Don't know why it even qualified for a camera.

Hi. Saying that the money raised is going to road safety and not other things just means that the money they would have spent on roads and road safety can be spent on other things. WE STILL LOOSE. Cheers MD
