 I was flicking through some of my old Car magazines and found this story. It tells of how the then un-named Territory being given the nod in it's early stages of development.  It's interesting that they considered a "Outback/Forester style" (the failed route that Holden took!) but Nasser choose the "BMW X5 style". It's also interesting that they planned to export it and make 25000 per year.  Nasser clearly got the body style right but what happened to the export plans ?! I also wonder what the other five body styles were. (I thought this may be of interest) Sourced from - June 2000 edition | Wheels Magazine.

You can basically nail down 4 variants easily, based on the idea of running either a Falcon SWB or wagon LWB and also either keeping the low roof wagon style body or a high roof style wagon.
Interestingly, whilst they went with the higher roof, they also went with a unique wheelbase and overhangs. |

In 2000, would be interesting to see what the prototype 'x5' style wagon looked like, and if it incorporated the AU styling. Looks like Detroit plagiarized the concept, hit it with an ugly stick and built their own Ford freestyle for the USDM and left Ford Australia hanging with the export deal (in hindsight, the freestyle didn't suffer from balljoint issues
 ). But maybe the 'freestyle' was how the original territory concept looked, before Ford incorporated the new BA look into the design later on in the process. bloody yanks, love them, hate them, can't live with out them. |

The Freestyle was actually modified after the brass at Ford saw the Territory. Have a look at the C Pillar. What does it remind everyone of?

The Freestyle never had the nice punchy straight 6 in it though. First version was a 151kW 3L V6 that made max power around 6000rpm and the second version was better with a 195kW 3.5L V6, but still at ultra high revs compared to the FoA I6. It wouldn't have had that big fat flat torque curve either. No Turbo version or ZF transmission either. We were blessed with the Territory in this country.
