guy at my work had a diesel fitted to his falcon, in place of the original V8...
basically, he needed an economical car, and it was cheaper to put that engine in it and run it, than it was to put the car on LPG... |

diesel converted falcon were quite common back home in the 90s, with diesel being around 50c a litre cheaper, and cheap jap import parts available easily it was a popular conversion.
ld28's were one of the more common conversions in to xd/e's, and a good well set up turbo diesel absolutely decimates a stock crossy lol, while costing half as much to run. |

Got to say that I remember at about that time I caught an XD taxi and the driver told me that it had been fitted with the 4 cyl diesel motor, cool but a bit of a slug if I remember.

I'd say that the owner felt that diesel was the way to go when they started phasing out leaded fuel. Good idea well ahead of it's time. Motor would outlive the vehicle.
