Hyundai Australia granted wish for rear-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe. But Genesis sedan out.
Hyundai will target driving enthusiasts rather than budget buyers for the first time in Australia after confirming it will import the company's rear-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe. The sporty two-door could go on sale locally as early as 2012 as the brand seeks to attract younger buyers with a more aspirational product. The boss of Hyundai Motor Company, Steve S Yang, seems to have ruled out the rear-wheel-drive Genesis sedan for Australia, which has V6 and V8 variants and is part of the brand's experiment to see if it can appeal to buyers of luxury cars such as BMWs and Audis. Advertisement: Story continues below "The right-hand-drive [RHD] coupe will be available for Australia and other RHD countries. But at the moment we don't have any plans for the RHD Genesis sedan [for Australia]," he says. "We are trying our best to meet the customers' needs all over the world but we have to think about profitability. Yes, we know there is a market for the RHD sedan for Australia, and maybe Singapore, Hong, Kong, South Africa. In total, how many of the RHD do you think we can sell? Maybe we can sell 1000 to 2000 to Australia." He concedes the niche coupe version of the Genesis will probably sell even fewer cars, but emphasised Hyundai's desire to appeal to younger buyers. "We know there are customers looking for this segment. Total volume will be very small but we are very interested in developing the RHD Coupe." The Genesis Coupe is the spiritual successor to the Tiburon coupe that sold in Australia until last year, though the Tiburon was smaller and front-wheel drive. The Genesis Coupe sells in the US and Korean markets with a choice of a turbocharged 4-cylinder or 3.3-litre V6 engines. Drive tested the Coupe in South Korea last year with mixed impressions. His support for a right-hand-drive version of the Genesis coupe - which could arrive in Australia as early as next year - gives Hyundai's Australian arm an opportunity to install a halo performance car in its range to complement the smaller Veloster coupe that will comes to Australia later this year. "We've been pushing for a Genesis product for some time, so it's good news that we're going to be getting a Genesis model in Australia," says Hyundai Australia spokesman Ben Hershman. "It's been a desirable element because Genesis represents the progression of the brand, just like Veloster does. It's not just about building cars that offer great value in large numbers, it's about creating cars that excite people and bring people into Hyundai dealerships who are looking for an aspirational product. And that's something that we need in our mix in Australia."

I can see myself in that car. But then I can also see myself in Scarlett Johansson, but that's neither here nor there.

Wonder if this reactionary to Toyota bringing their coupe to the market?
Having said that, the Hyundai performance will no doubt out-do the Toyota as the Toyota is rumoured only to come in to Aus with an N/A 4cylinder. Interesting it doesn't note what price level it will enter the market in. I'm not 100% sure just how performance driven this car is... I note that it is an N/A V6, same as a 370z but does it have the same pedigree as the Z-car? If so, should it be priced in the 60-70k bracket as the Z-car currently is? Or is it nowhere close to being on the same playing field? As far as being scared goes... nothing for Ford to be scared about with them not bringing the sedan. Perhaps Ford supporters could get a little nervous if Hyundai were to announce that the sedan was coming to Australia.

been telling people about this car for years, the Hyundai V6 and V8 are very impressive. SCUD here is a video with the Genesis vs a Mustang and 370Z http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77MstcS02Z8

I welcome it. With Hyundai's quality improving quite a lot in the past few models, a RWD coupe platform would certainly attract some potential buyers who would otherwise snub their nose at most FWD cars.

The sedan is a superb car as well.... won NA-COTY. I think this is just the precursor to the sedan getting here. If it does, the local boys should be worried... very worried. Sedan: Coupe: You can see those pics were taken in early 2009. The Koreans are very smart as with all models sold here we essentially get the 'series 2 or 3' version... meaning all the new model bugs have been ironed out and we get a car that has been refined and improved for markets that demand quality. i think the Hyundai V8's will surprise a few people making the Top 10 engines lists 4.6L makes 285kw the 5L makes 320kw, with a tune will it make more power than the Coyote 5L's i don't think so but u don't know.
i can't wait for the Hyundai ZK it's a 5.5L Turbo V8 with wait for it............... 475kw even KIA stepped up it's game, incorporating a 5L Hyundai engine in it's upcoming sexy K9. Last edited by prasac; 23-06-2011 at 11:11 AM. |

With a few mods they can look pretty good too imo. There is massive aftermarket support for these things in the US and the exchange rate being so good will help too.
Looking forward to seeing a few on the road but I'll be sticking with my XR5T

Noice!!!
I find it interesting that makers are starting to go back to rear wheel drive for some models. I mean, it's not the old days of front wheel drive where they are all plagued with horrifying understeer and torque steer...most front wheel drives have very capable and chuckable chassis nowadays, and as marketing guys say, the vast majority of people couldn't care less which end is driven in the car they buy. Very nice looking car. I agree..."cat meet pidgeons" if rear drive V8 versions ever show up... |

If the V8 was coming I'd suspect a few bandwagon jumpers from both camps.

Guys there is no V8 available in the coupe. In the US it's only available with turbo 4 and V6. The sedan is the one that you can get the V8 in.

Lol, I got flamed for promoting these and the Equus on the forums a while ago.
I wonder how much they will cost when they land here, might be a good present to myself when I finish my apprenticeship. |
