Exclamation $2 million car impounded for Hooning

$2 million car impounded
STEPHEN OTTLEY
May 7, 2010

Having dad throw you the keys to his car is the dream of most young men.

When that car is an exotic sports car it's even better. But when it's the world's fastest road car, the Bugatti Veyron capable of 400km/h, bringing the car home in one piece is the No.1 priority.

Unfortunately for 20-year-old Dutchman Thurs Perridon, he didn't bring the Veyron home to dad at all. It was impounded by the police when he was nabbed doing 160km/h in a 80km/h zone in the quad-turbo, 16-cylinder supercar.

Thurs's father, Michael, is no stranger to speed, though.

He is the director of Trust International, a major Dutch company that has sponsored formula one teams Red Bull and Spyker.

Dutch police haven't said yet if and when they'll release the $2 million Veyron back to the (one would imagine very annoyed) father.

Source: The Sydney Morning Herald

I bet more than a few words were said !!! And he won't get the keys again !!

Why would you even lend a 16 cylinder Quad Turbo Bugatti Veyron to a 20 year old in the first place? Both of them are idiots.

I hate being a spelling nazi, 747jet, but it's would have, not "of".
I know you're only joking about the "outrunning" bit, but it's the last thing we want to joke about these days.

I guess, in the scheme of things, it proves being rich doesn't mean you have any more consideration for logic or common sense. When your dad is the whatever of F1 you could probably hire out your local track every week, and borrow dad's car at the same time.

Even if he did decide to outrun the cops - a bit hard to hide. How many Veyrons are there in the Netherlands? With the rego - easily traced back to the owner.

Actually, it's could have!

Is 160 the speed he was clocked at? I had heard it was 230. Either way, good to see Vic is not the only confiscator of cars for minor (!) speeding infringements.

I am with Falc'Man. It is 'would have', because it is only a hypothetical.
747jet cannot say, 'could have' because they don't own a car capable of outrunning the cops.

'Would have' implies that given the same circumstances, they could outrun the cops.

But to you kiddies out there, don't drive like an idiot.

A car like that should have been used on a track if the young man wanted to test it...

THe father though should realise that a 20 year old is only a baby out of nappies that has completed high school. Far too young to understand the responsibility that comes with a vehicle such as that.

Let's not forget that that these folks with that sort of money are not living in the same world as most of us (certainly not me). They are living in fantasy land.

There's nothing in this story for me. The SMH is just filling up column space with crap instead of real news.

I agree with you 100% however, a car like that can also be used to sexually arouse many car enthusiasts. On second thought, Bugatti Veyrons need to come with a warning like Viagra; "Use of this product may invoke a serious chubby - consult your doctor prior to use".

Envy? It's not envy. It's contempt. Not because they've worked hard and been successful, but because of the ignorant things they do when they get that rich. This case is a good example.

Next thing someone's going to tell me that Hollywood movie stars are deserving of respect.

Curious to think what tone this story may have taken with a few subtle substitutions.
eg."20 yr old Melb.resident",(although substitute any other town); "didn't bring the vs/xr6 home"; "he was nabbed doing....in a disused industrial estate/main road late at night"

BAM: How can this be used as an example of how ignorant people are when they get rich?

Even here in our own country we have idiots getting their VL Commodores impounded because they are doing 200km/h in a 60 zone. Just because this was the son of a succesful person and he was in a Bugatti does not really give reason to say he was an ignorant rich person. As far as I see it he was just being a stupid 20 y.o who was fortunate enough to have a sucessful father and a nice car to do it in.

And why can't hollywood actors and sctresses get respect. They have a talent and are good at what they do. Of course their are going to be some rogue ones in the mix but take Johnny Depp for example. A good actor and never really in the spotlight for anything bad.

Yeah because that would totally work. It won't exactly just 'blend in' with all of the other vehicles the next time it is out on the road.

I can see the argument with his old man now.
I bet he wont be allowed to drive it for a while. Tough I guess, he'll just have to drive the Enzo.

Actually, arlester, the idiot here is the father. Normal parents don't let their 20 year old sons loose in $2M 400 kmh super cars. Especially the Veyron which is notoriously difficult to keep under control if you have a lead foot. Imagine the tragedy and sobbing if the poor young fella disintegrated the car and himself in the trees.

Point taken about Johnny Depp. I guess there's a few good ones.

I don't follow what you mean.

First you say "you can't call him ignorant just because he's rich", then you say "he was being just being a stupid 20 y.o.".

What's the difference?

Although the law won't discriminate between rich and poor when judging such scenarios this guy should be frowned upon a little more than one who doesn't have the means to hire his own track day.

He's not only ignorant, he's also foolish.

Basically I was taking away the fact that he has money. Just calling him a 20 y.o that was doing something wrong in a car.

I do agree with BAM in the fact that the father is in the wrong. But we also don't know what kind of driving experience the kid does have. And if it were possible for him to drive anything else at the time.

It's neither envy, nor contempt.

It's jealousy.

How what some lucky 20 y.o does in Holland affects users so much here that they feel the need to lambaste both the driver and the owner is beyond me. It's one thing for a useless opinionated rubbish newspaper to fill in some space on a page with the obvious intent to give readers a little laugh, but another for some here to get so worked up over it.

Why care so much?
