If some people look through pickles Damaged Vehicles there are alot of new fg's like xr6, xr8's etc that have done less then 100 km's and written off because vehicle smoke and heat affected. Written off a car for smelling like smoke? Theres one car that might make you cry - http://www.pickles.com.au/damaged/ve...110362/lotid-0

Thats why insurance premiums are so high
Makes bargains for other people who take the risk on possible future problems. I have owned several WOV, all good cars after some work by me. |

Im tipping the smoke affected part is actually that someone gassed themselves in it.
Just a polite way of putting it. Most of the time a car that someone has suicided in gets written off. A mate of ours did it in his one tonner years ago. Car was uninsured and his olds didnt even pick it up from the police impound before it was disposed of. Car ended up going through 4 different owners in 12 months in the local area. Saw the car for sale down the coast a couple of years later and stopped to have a look at it. Opened the door with the current owner and after it sitting in the heat locked up the smell in it was vile. I thought it was my brain playing tricks on me as I knew what had happened in the car , so I asked the owner did it smell or was I imagining it. He replied yep it did thats why he was selling it , no matter what he did he could never get the smell out of it. |

Theres about 20 new Fords on Pickles with that same write off, so id say a dealer had a fire.

certainly seems strange from an insurance perspective, there has to be more to it.
In reference to the smoke affected cars, one would think it cheaper to replace the carper, condition the leather and hange a tree off the mirror and sell it for retail (or in the case of the above GT, ex-demo) There is more to this than what you see IMO.

It may look OK, but whats hidden behind the panels could be the problem.
Heat damage could mean there is potentially melted looms, buckled plastics and heat damaged metal means mass rust in a very short time. Smoke can also damage a car in many ways too. The glass could be smoke damaged (essentially smoked/darkened) which if it is deemed to be damaged, it would all have to be replaced. paint could very well be the same. the interior could stink of toxic fumes, which in most cases, a simple carpet/interior change wont get rid of the smell. I know for a fact that an insurer wont just write off a car like that because it was near a fire and didnt suffer any damage. The damage is there, its real and it exists other wise the car would have been washed and returned to its owner or sold on the lot as a Demo. Any damage that is listed against it, has to be repaired too so this may not be a cheap bargain at the end of the day. So long as those that are looking realise you ant just buy it and expect to go and get rego for it without having to replace/repair anything and have it inspected first. |

Either way, If you used axhaust gas to replace oxygen, it still wouldnt take long before you suffocated from lack of oxygen. Whether its carbon monoxide poisoning or just suffocation, its still going to have the same effect either way. |

its straight poison comin out exhausts till the cats heat up ??? maybe some light on this subject ??? there are many reasons why cars are written of obviously the cars at pickles have been inspected and deemed to dear to fix hence a write off wats the story with warranties on written off cars ??? no warranty i think u buy and its a dude well thats just tuff |

Essentially if the CAT and car are 100% you only get water vapour and CO2. There is roughly 19% oxygen in the air, lowering that oxygen count by a few percent (by adding CO2) will kill you. Therefore it doesn't matter if it's a new car or an old one as you will still die. |

Doesnt matter how well the car and cat is running, it will still emit Carbon monoxide, Nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbons, as well as of course Carbon dioxide.
But yeah, its the CO2 that will kill you first.

any internal combustion engine in a confined area can cause death as it (the engine) consumes the oxygen and emits fumes even if the fumes are not deadly or poisonous the lack of oxygen in the atmosphere will mess you up we all need oxygen without it we won't last long.
I don't think insurance companies would write cars off if they could avoid it, gotta be cheaper to repair them. Talking stupid write offs I had a ZL/lane that had some panel damage (long story) to the rear quarter and front quarter you could drive this car all its lights and indicators worked and there was no damage to steering or suspension or anything else all damage was cosmetic- this car was written off because the cost to repair the damage exceeded the value of the vehicle, even though you could drive it as it was I feel that is a stupid write off, but in that case it was cheaper to do that than to repair it - who cares about how inconvenient that is tho...
