Do diesel mechanics mate (Plant/ mobile plant) allot better money and better opportunity's more so if you are willing to work away.
A mate of mine is a Fitter and is working as a Truck Mechanic ATM for a bit of a change and is on $27p/h and that's in the metro aria, You would be hard pressed to pull that as a light duty Mechanic, also has a few bonuses Like Cost price an Auto parts, access to the Workshop, discounted tools, Another mate of mine is a Plant mechanic for West Trac CAT and is on over 100K a year. Caterpillar and mobs like that normally have there applications and Interview's for January starts around September-October, so keep a eye out in the paper and on the Net. Cheers.

if you're good at maths and science, and dont mind living in ural australia, then finish yr.12 and go onto do desiel mechanics with Cavpower, you will make a KILLING ... 150K+ a year

I dont think the extra you make as a diesel mechanic makes up for the absolute filth your going to be covered in for the rest of your time working as one.

Seems your only in Year 10, look at doing Mechanics as a VET subject while doing Yr 11 and 12, it will be looked on a lot more favorably.
If you really don't want to do VCE, then a pre-apprenticeship course is the way to go at your local TAFE, again this will be looked at favorably.

Do your VCE. Do a VET course. You'll be cream of the crop once you are finished school and looking for an appreticeship.
