Pet Barra

I've just bought a pet barramundi, i want to know if anyone else has one. What you feed it, and how quickly they grow, also roughly what size tank will i require.

Will try to get some but is hard as its in water. It is only baby about 4 to 5 inchs and cost $8 from local markets.

Mate of mine use to have one, got fairly big too. I'de often stop at a pet shop on the way over for a few beer & buy $20 bucks worth of mini fish to throw in the tank, A lot of fun. (Hope that doesnt sound too cruel)

Mate of mine has one. He got has it in a large tank and feeds it gold fish and little fish he nets at the boat ramp near his joint up in Darwin.

He reckons once it is too big he will eat it.

We sell Barra Pellets in a 25kg bag. It's a product made by Ridley Agriproducts.
A few local farmers have got some massive Barra swimming in their dams.
Where abouts are you located? Surely if you ask a local petshop they'll point you in the right direction.

Watching turkeys eat though, isnt quite as fun.
Just to make sure though I have the farm turkey pen right on my rear fence, I'll just go and throw them some bread and see if they hunt it down like a BARA hunts a gold fish.

just be aware they are known to smash tanks in excitement , 2 years i reckon would pull it up , before you will have to eat him , move him on.

That'd be kinda awkward slaughtering you're own pet after 2 years of friendship.

I used to have a pet Flounder, (those unco flat looking fish), because it had a turbo cahrged diet it grew huge, so I let it go at the beach where I stole it from. The bloody thing got tame just like a dog when I had it.

what size tank will i require.

mate than can grow to over a metre long so i would say a swimming pool

The size of the tank and its surroundings in the tank can have a big impact as to what size it will grow to. From those pics it looks likes its only a little 2ft tank.
Just feed him small fish and even gold fish. You'll be suprised how big of a goldfish he can fit in his mouth, Good fun to watch!!! ;)

Yeah i just feed it a guppy, didn't expect it to eat it and in one shot ate it. great fun to watch

i vote that you put it in the pool - feed it on various protein and body building supplements then when its about four foot long we can use it like a mascot - everytime a barra engine runs a good time or dyno figure BAM we slap a random ls1.com member across the face with BARRA the AFF wet fish.

Mate had one as well, kept if or years and changed tanks 3 times. Didnt actually out grow the tank but they grow to fit. If you keep it in a small tank it will get to a certain size and stop, bigger tank bigger fish. Fed it yabbies he caught, worms, bits of raw meat.

Is raw meatok for it,i've feed it pellets and a few guppys didn't eat the worm i put in and its still too small to feed a yabby to yet.

I would love a pet Barra. A few years ago I got an Oscar (cool pet) and used to feed it goldfish, pellets, silverside, mince, chicken etc etc. I had it in a 6' tank and it grew to about 12"...... sadly it died when we moved house.
My next fish will either be a Barra or a Mangrove Jack..... those mongrels have teeth and are as quick as lightning. I got badly bitten by one at a pet shop in Manly.

They won't grow as big as what the do in the wild, they will adapt to the tank. I would go a pretty good size though, and keep the temp around 26-29C?

Sarotaga is another great aquarium fish, another native which comes from same areas as barra. The local aquarium shop should have the answers, or google about looking after one.

Put some gravel and logs in there too for cover, and plants to help filter the water

The in laws used to have 3 in a tank (6 foot i think), used to feed them pellets, guppies, meat etc.
That got huge and used to terrorise all the other fish in the tank, when they moved they gave them to a barra farm.
A guy at the pet store told him a story about a guy who had 1 that got to about 60cm, got up one morning and the barra was dead on the floor with the glass lid of the tank smashed. Story went that a mouse ran across the top of the tank and the barra went for and caught it but died from being out of the water. The mouse was still in its mouth!
Put some weed and plants and rocks in there with him too, the tank looks a bit bare.

They'll eat things half their own length, so don't stress too much about the size of the food. If it eats pellets, it'll probably eat just about anything. Just vary it's diet a bit and you should be OK. Hope your filtrations up to scratch though, they are messy buggers.
