Default Alpha Numeric Road Numbering- Like or Dislike?

Well see that all the states seem to be adopting this new policy of Alpha Numeric roads like the British system; I was wondering what everyone's opinion on it was.

Personally i hate the bloody thing- I though the old skool US "Interstate system" was great- Distinctive, Easy to spot & well known. The green and gold shield for the National Highways, Black & White shield for State Highways, the Blue Shield for Arterials and the Freeway/Metro road shields were great.

It was great when you were lost when travelling through some obscure town and all you need to do was find the nice old 'shield' and you knew all was well again.

These new signs seem like Alphabet soup to me, they all look the bloody same and they seem like a waste of tax payer dollars.

-Linkgage for those who dont know what im talking about

Doesn't bother me as I've seen them for a bloody long time.

But I am hardly qualified, as I haven't yet driven on a long trip.

it's a shame they don't spend the money on actually improving the roads instead of putting up bull$hit signs. as others have said, we do our homework before leaving home and look for appropriate town names if it's a route we've never been on.

There's only one of these signs that I've seen so far that I liked.
It was in Tasmania, and had 'A351' written on it.
I knew I was on the right road then!!

Town names matter more to me than Highway numbers.

Road numbers are somewhat im portant, trying to interchange roads in Campbelltown NSW getting from the Hume (31) to Putty (69) can be difficult.

I preferred it when the turn off signs had the towns name and distance instead of the towns name and the route number. If you want to know how far away the town is to get your bearings, you now have to take the turn and drive up the road 100m to find out how far the town is. I have not once used the route numbers, and most maps don't have them anyway.

Take 'A576' from Katoomba, and you'll get to Parkes, Alice Springs and Curtin. Continue following it you'll get to Bali, Singapore and eventually Medan if you go all the way. _2:

'M1' reminds me of the British Midland 737 that crashed on the embankment at Kegworth near the like-named motorway in Britain.

Sounds too much like flying IFR than driving your car to me.

In germany its used super extensively..

Which is good. Because when your flying in traffic at 250 kmph.. Sometimes its hard to read "Wabadinglebingbangboo 5km".

Maybe a pioneering first set to raising speed limits..

Those numbers have been there in Vic for years on the major arterials. Just filtering through to rest now. Nothing wrong with that system, a road is road by any name...

to ask a potentially stupid question, whats wrong with the current system. in agreement to what GT-0733 said, there are that many potholes in the roads around my local area, how about spending the money fixing them!
