Default holiday in Hong Kong? anyone been there?

We are thinking about holidaying in Hong Kong early next year and wondered if anyone had been there recently and could recommend a hotel for a family of four (2 adults and 2 kids)? we would like a good location, close to shopping and transport. we have been to a travel agent but they seem to sell products that perhaps they make a big profit from? just wanting some advice from any recent visitors. or perhaps any other ideas for cheap shopping destinations for technology goods.

I live here in hong kong and work in a hotel.

Few things to look at, LOW SEASON, basically when there are no trade shows on in the city as when they are on the hotels fill up and double prices..... ouch.

Time of year,
Chinese new year is on Feb 20 next year, thats about the best time, all shops open, but factories closed over border so air quality is good, little bit cold though, under 18c, hotels are empty as all factories closed, so no business for business travellers.

Doesn't really matter where you stay, public transport is cheap and excellent and HK isn't big.

Soooo many places to buy cheap electronic stuff, but like everything, if you pay cheap... you get cheap, normally grey market items from japan which come with no warranty etc.
Best to hope the aussie dollar is strong, or have a good friend that knows where to shop.... LIKE ME HAHAHA.

Hong Kong is a great city, so much to do.

Let me know if you need any more info.

Qantas do flights with accom inclusive... perhaps try them for special deals???

Also look at Disneyland and Ocean Park for a couple of days to keep the kiddies amused.

Mick.
