I have an old Rotary/ tiller which now has a wrecked 6 HP Tecumseh engine.I would like to keep it going, but problem is can’t get Tecumseh crank anymore.Honda is too pricey as is B&S.A Chinese 6.5 engine is priced under $200 which is the price point to make it viable to get it going again.Question is,have many of you on this forum had any experience with these cheaper engines.

Thanks Coo. Besta007 Yes I can buy a kit, but, the problem I have is that the crank big end journal is worn about 20 thou, fair bit more than the 2 or so it should have.Yeah Horizontal,I have seen them for as low as just under $140,don’t if they are all comparable in quality etc, because they all look exactly the same externally

I've had a bit to do with a few of those "Chonda" Motors. & they're fine. Parts are interchangable with the real Honda's. Only Problem I've had is don't run E10 in 'em as the rubber fuel line & seals in the Carby get eaten by The ethanol.. Run Premium in them & you'll be fine.

Much the same experience, the engines themselves aren't bad but the fueling side isn't great.

Have a look at Torini engines. Very good quality engines.
6.5HP: https://www.revolutionindustrial.com...e-petrol-6.5hp 7.0HP with electric start: https://www.revolutionindustrial.com...electric-start 13HP: https://www.revolutionindustrial.com...ne-petrol-13hp 15HP: https://www.revolutionindustrial.com...ne-petrol-15hp Torini also build a race version used for Go Kart racing. I can personally vouch for the race motors. Super reliable and can take a beating. Most parts are interchangeable with the industrial versions in case you want to "upgrade" components. http://www.torini.com.au/documents/o...axx_manual.pdf The Chinese "Chonda" is nothing but trouble. I would advise to stay away. |

The machine is old, then don't over-spend on it, I'm sure you will get years from a new no-name Chinese engine.
I wouldn't read to much into the made in China thing. You can imagine my disappointment, but not surprise to learn my brand new mower with a Honda GXV160 engine was made in China, most likely in the same factory that also produces "Chonda's". And Briggs & Stratton engines have been made in China for year, some are labeled "Made in the USA from Global parts", ie assembled by Chinese components.

A lot of guys on a mower forum I'm on seem to think the Chondas are pretty good value for money. Popular for old Scott Bonnars etc with a dead Briggs.

You can get a second-hand 2' pump for a couple of hundred, throw the pump away.

I've had a few Chonda motors over the years. One in particular is on a compactor. Left outside, neglected, stale fuel and still starts first pull every time, even after 6 months.
If you look up John and Johnno, they have a good range of very reasonably priced engines. They are in Ballarat but will freight. |

Hi,
I find a good source of real Honda engines (and some Chonda's) at your nearest recycling centre. In Perth I can pick up various machine with a small motor for typically $50 to $100, and in average the engines only need a small repair to get going again, The last one I picked up for under $100 was a 24hp, sitting on a carpet cleaner. It had nothing wrong with it, hooked up power to the fuel pump and started it. Cheers,
