Ok people can anyone confirm or dispel the rumors that the supposed free loan car supplied when you get your ford scheduled serviced has an insurance excess of $5000 if its is damaged in your possession. Has anyone read the fine print when signing for it.

They tell you when you sign the form what you're signing for.
From memory when I get my loan car from Ford, it's a $2000 excess. I can pay $30 to waive the excess, but I just wave in their face I'm not paying a cent. It *may* differ from dealer to dealer? But I'm quite sure the one I use is $2000 not $5000. I may be wrong though. I do know it's some really stupid.

So I wonder what the go is when you test drive a new car at a dealership and were unfortunate enough to have a prang? .... You don't normally sign anything and they have ever mentioned to me what the excess would be?

As others have mentioned, a large excess in the case of an accident or pay a $33 fee to wave the excess.
I'm happy to pay the extra $33 and have a loan car for the convenience. I detest the curtesy bus. You end up being driven all over the town on the way to work or home, then have to do it all again at the end of the day. The ability to drive in, hand them the keys and drive off all in my own time takes so much hassle out of the process. The side benefit is I get to drive a different car each time.

This loan car was being driven by a customer and he hit a deer. The car is a write off. Things happen. Pay the money or wear the risk. Even as an employee I run the same risk when I drive them. It is actually that dealers insurance company setting the amounts. Not the dealer. So many people come in so self righteous about the “free loan car” expecting it to even have free fuel. Get real people. |

Did it when my girlfriend bought her Audi. (I had to test drive for her, she was on some serious pain meds at the time) Did it when I took a friend car shopping and she tried out a few different vehicles. Did it plenty of times when I was shopping for my own car at second hand lots, although some didn't bother with it, they were usually the dodgier yards with the cheaper cars. |

I've never signed a piece of paperwork fro a loan car at the dealership I go to. Having said that, most of the cars I get are Falcons no newer than FG. Normally B series.....

when a car is involved in an accident and is at fault, whose responsibility is it to cover the cost of repair, the driver or owner of the car?

Not saying you are wrong, but that is not what others in this thread are saying.

I think despite what some say, if you borrow a car from anyone and you have an accident and are at fault, it is your responsibility to pay for the damage done. If the borrowed car has no insurance then the total amount comes from you. If the car has insurance, then you pay the excess, which in most cases would be somewhat cheaper than most accidents.
Yes, you should know the excess amount, but no good disagreeing with it, you either accept it and use the car, or you don't agree and don't use the car. If you argue that you did not sign some piece of paper, then the cost may come totally from you.

At worst it's been a cursory glance at my licence. Maybe it's an age related thing?

I'm in my 40s, and there was definitely paperwork for the Audi. Not for a Camry at another place. I found if it's a branded dealership, there's always paperwork. If it's a dodgier car yard, not so often. |

When we bought my new Holden, June 2016, there was nothing to sign. I don't think they even looked at my licence (Holden dealer) but I've got an honest face Later the same month we test drove my wife's new Kuga (from Ford dealer) we had a form to sign. From memory I think the excess was $1500. First time for us but I figured it was a sign of the times.

I currently have a ford courtesy car, was told it's a $5,000 excess in the event of an accident, or I can choose to reduce that to $1,500 by agreeing to a $35 fee upon collecting my car, it's the same everytime

This is actually a good 'back door' way of test driving a car. i'd have never considered even test driving the Ecosport, but having one for the day, it seemed a lot nicer car than i expected.
not thinking of buying one, but if i was in the market for a cheap SUV, then i may have been swayed.
