Hmmm, lets see....
1 desktop PC 1 2TB external drive 2 laptops 1 netbook 2 7" tablets 1 smart phone 1 wireless router/modem 2 smart TVs' (but only one connected to wifi) 1 GPS 3 or 4, or is it 5 flash drives floating around the place + a number of SD cards Oh, and don't forget the WiiU Then there's the stuff that is gathering dust like the 2 mobile dongles, 3 routers, the old Pentium 4 tower that my son abandoned when he was given the netbook...which he has now all but abandoned since having access to a tablet. Plus the various bits of electronic waste- old monitors, memory, hard drives, keyboards and mice, printers and scanners that are cheaper to replace than buy ink for etc. I try not to think about it and try not to try and keep up with the latest and greatest. If it does what I need it to do then that's good enough. The only reason I have a smart phone is the missus wanted it. Then she abandoned it after a week as "all too hard" because it kept making calls every time she touched the screen, so she pinched my workmans phone.

Considering what I do not much at all actually. None of its mine. The company I work for and their clients buy me laptops, pay for internet, etc. I have a dirty old desktop somewhere that hasn't been touched in 3yrs.

Ahh... so my 2TB external drive that holds all my "media" and is attached to my desktop PC but is accessible by the laptops and netbook would be considered NAS?

Technically no, as a NAS is its own standalone device. If you turn off/reboot the desktop, then all access to the external drive is lost. A NAS can be configured to managed mutiple drives for example raid 1/3/5, quotas, specific user access and so on. However from a practical point of view the external drive does a similar thing in providing access to your data from other systems.

The laptops and netbook can access and write to the external drive and most importantly, with a laptop connected to my old plasma in the bedroom I can watch anything on the external drive by switching the TV to PC mode and using it as a monitor and sit in bed with the wifi keyboard and mouse and still perv on Xhamst....er....I mean browse the forums.

lol... good question.. Honesly- this is the first time I've really thought about it.. I read through the post after I finished typing, sat back and said to myself "Damn... how did I manage to compile so much tech!?" ...A lot of it just integrates into your life though right? The NAS just sits and hides...I forget it's there. The TV, PS and the Wii are in the entertainment unit and the PC sits in the study, GPS in the car and the 3DS-XL on the bedside table or couch... It's still a fair bit though!

Take over the linen cupboard to hide all the networking gear, patch panels, NAS's, router, CCTV, etc. I'd hate to look at all that crap now
And if the main PC gets upgraded, and it's parts as are to the Lounge-room PC, then to the garage PC, etc |

Cool!, I might have to go get another HDD and do just that. The current one doubles as the system back up as well so I'd like to leave it where it is.
Cheers Burnz, this old dinosaur just learned something new.
