Exactly - I saw this come up from many people - either want to know exactly who AMEP's preferences or won't vote for them as they don't like the preferences they selected.

If that concerned you so much and you have that much time in your hands to sook about it select your own preferences

Xenophon interview on Lateline.

Amongst other things, he discusses his plans to introduce an electoral reform bill into parliament to abolish above the line voting and introduce partial preferential voting below the line. It will take preferencing power away from parties and put it back in the hands of voters.

I think a bill like this will be supported by both the majors and some form of partial preferential voting will be introduced. I do think it may end up watered down to above the line partial preferential voting because the major parties probably don't want to give up all their preferencing power.

Worth watching the full interview imo, he talks about climate change and the best way to address it given that both major parties have the same emissions targets. Also talks about the electricity market.

Australia needs a lot more Nick Xenephons and a lot less Ricky Muirs .

The only thing I fear, is us going down the European route of minority governments. A weak government (regardless of which party you support), is the worst thing for the country long term (yes I know I helped contribute to it, more me the fool). Unpopular decisions need to be made for the good of the nation long term, and sometimes, a minority is left worse off for the greater good (I'm not talking about sending people to the poverty line or begging in the streets, just less disposable income, 1st world problem). There are winners and losers in virtually all decisions, and a strong government has the power to make such decisions. Small interest groups sticking their 2 cents in having the power to change important national policies is usually counter productive. Weather you agree with what a government is doing, they have been voted in by the majority to do it! If the majority are unhappy, then they are moved on for the next bunch to have their turn. My 2 cents.

But did you research each of those parties? That was the problem I had, researching 110 parties to establish what all their policies were. I even had the ballot papers a week early for that purpose, and the researching was enlightening, but really did my head in. And took an awful long time....

Approve everything that comes across his lap, until it pertains to the particular interests he is there to serve.

Just for the rest of us, who on here who supported AMEP actually offered to run in place of Ricky?? How many who profess to be better representatives actually put their hand up to run in the election?

I take my hat off to Ricky, he made a decision to represent a party/group he believes in. Many on here complained about the lack of representation or input to government. You now have it via AMEP and yes, they used the preferencial system the correct way, the way the majors intendeed to use it themselves.

If your not willing to put your hand up when you have a chance and represent groups like AMEP (the Greens started with only 1 issue and played the system), don't complain when you don't have representation.

AMEP could, with the right support become a major figure like the Greens starting with one main aim and a dedicated group, but building as membership and input grows. So before hanging Ricky, let him and AMEP show how well they can represent enthusiasts and Australians in the Senate.
