12 months away from new car Options/Opinions please

Ok guys, I know I am 12 months away yet, but have been considering my options lately.

I have a 2007 Territory and love it.
What my dilemma is: after 2016 there will not be any new Territories made.

I am looking at insurance also, As part of GIO/Suncorp they have the option of a New car if written off for the life of the car providing The insurance is kept with that company.

If I was to get a Territory and in a few years will no longer be available new, so therefore will not be worth having that option on the insurance.

So my criteria is Large SUV, diesel.

Been considering this and looking at the Renault Koleos, Does anyone have any opinions or experience with these. Tell me what you think please.

Koleos is well equipped like all Renaults. Cheap, they're made by Renault Samsung as well so quality is good. They're a very popular car, and I believe they're fairly reliable from what I hear round the Renault traps.

Only thing is I think the next gen Koleos is changing from an SUV to an MPV. But don't quote me on that

Koleos are about the size of a Corolla, save yourself some money and get a 20 grand Focus, Mazda3 or spend a bit more and get the Cruze SRI. They will be better than the Renault.

I don't understand your dilemma of buying another Territory in 12 months. They are one of the best SUVs around.

I agree, what are you worried about? Ford are not pulling out of Australia totally and parts will be available. If the Territory fits your needs and you like it get one next year.

Also consider the Ford Kuga. I rented on in the UK and it was fantastic.

With the insurance option of a new vehicle if written off for the life of the car. The model needs to be available to enable this.

For example if in 2017 I had a Territory and I was unfortunate enough to have an accident that would write it off, I would be unable to have a new Territory as they will no longer be available. Which then means rather than having it replaced with a brand new car worth around $55,000. I would be paid out the fair and reasonable market value of a 2014 Territory which may be around $25,000.

This is why I am wanting a car that will still be available.

The policy conditions state:
We will:
›› replace your vehicle with a new vehicle of the same make and
model, including, similar accessories, modifications, tools and spare
parts as shown on your certificate of insurance;
›› pay the on road costs such as stamp duty, CTP, registration and
delivery charges applicable and your policy will continue until its
expiry date.

We do not cover ›› The cost for replacing or purchasing an extended warranty;
›› The cost to replace your vehicle with a new one if the make or
model of your vehicle has been superseded or discontinued or we
cannot find an exact replacement within 90 days of us deciding
your vehicle is a total loss. Instead, we will decide to either:
›› offer you a replacement vehicle that is in our opinion a similar
make or model to your vehicle as is currently available including,
all similar accessories, modifications, tools and spare parts as
shown on your certificate of insurance. We will also pay the on
road costs such as stamp duty, CTP, registration and delivery
charges applicable and your policy will continue until its expiry
date; or
›› pay you the sum insured on your certificate of insurance less any

I see your point but no matter what you buy there is always the possibility that the car you buy is not available in such an event. Also, what is the "life of the car" according to the insurance company? It must have a limit, say 5 years. Talk to your insurance company now and work out some options. They may do a deal where if your Territory is written off in 2017 you can get say a Kuga Titanium AWD. They retail for 55k with technology pack.

That's ok, I was just asking for my benefit. My point about what ever you buy may not be available still stands. Especially if it is imported.

If the Territory is what you really want it would be a shame to get second choice because, in the unlikely event that if the first choice was destroyed, the insurance company will give you the car that you may or would have chosen as second choice to replace it.

Kia Sorrento is a good car, and its got a killer diesel engine, that 2.2L 4 cylinder is probably the best in that capacity range for sure. I've driven one I helped out with the electric brakes on, 145KW and 400nm+ is damn fine from 2.2L of diesel engine, it felt quicker than my TDCI Focus thats for sure.

Kia admits that it used the Ford Territory as a benchmark for ride quality and the BMW X5 as its template for handling characteristics.

There is no guarantee that Koleos will be around 2017 either.. and ifmbased on sales of them it probably wont be . BTW it is a small suv not in a same category as Territory.
It is a flawed logic to buy a car based on a fact that it has to be available 4,5 years into the future for insurance replacement purpose.
What about practicality , performance ,economy , handling ,ride looks etc..
After reading the clause in question they do say they will replace it with similar make or model which In my book means it does not even need to be same brand of vehicle. So what is similar to Territory - i would say X5 would be the closest

No but agreed value still depreciates each year also. Usually off the market value at the time of renewal.

Well if you do write off a 2016 Territory, you might end up getting the vehicle that replaces Territory.......

Look at exactly what it says:

In an insurers opinion that may be a Holden Captiva for example.

Go the Terri, and in the event its a total loss and cant be replaced you opt for a cash settlement.
Really I don't understand what all the fuss is about unless im missing something.

And on a technicality for example, you could also argue the Terri cant be replaced as you only want an Aussie manufactured SUV, hence why you purchased it in the 1st place.

Captiva and Territory are now in different vehicle segments.

Ford will have a "replacement" for Territory and Captiva will be gone by then too..
I think you could argue the case for remaining with the same brand..

Really unsure why one would limit themselves to a particular vehicle just in case they write it off in a few years time. Just buy what's best for your intended purpose and desires. The chances are you won't write it off, and in the unlikely situation that you do, worry about it then. Depends a lot on what this replacement option you mention costs. I would think its quite a bit more, and not worthwhile.

Perhaps being in the insurance industry where every day you deal with people writing their cars off, you get a false sense that it happens quite often.

What happens if your insurer changes their policy terms at your next renewal? Your stuffed.

Buy a Territory, there's a chance it's replacement will still be badged a territory.

Frankly, the GIO "new car replacement policy" sounds like a dead-set rort to me...
They no doubt bump the premium price each year with no option for you to shop
around or compare prices, as one is bound by the contract from commencement.

I tend to agree with others on the car selection. Stick with a Territory if you love em
and then figure out the rest later if some unfortunate circumstances arise.

He was looking at a Koleos, which is the same size of a Corolla. If he is looking at cars that small then he might as well look at cars like the Focus, Mazda3, Cruze SRI. He will get just as much room, better handling, better features, better ride, better handling, better fuel economy and save about 5-10 grand. compact SUVs are grossly overpriced in Australia for what you get.
