So first year of university is finished, now there is four months of holidays to blow : It's been a week and I am already bored, what to do ?
Can't go out with the girlfriend all the time, or the friends, that requires money. At the moment I work once a fortnight on Sundays in a chemist, spend majority of other nights doing pizza delivery at Dominos (how I loathe that job). I want a day time, more fun job...I've gone to like Repco, Autobarn, Bunnings, Harvey Norman, numerous other stores and shown my interest and given a resume in. I even went to Super Cheap.... So far I haven't got a reply yet...what do you guys recommend I do, I mean i actually WANT to work, you don't hear that much. Ok I've had my rant.

Hit the yellow pages and look for industries your interested in. A lot of retail already have finalised Christmas staffing.
Just remember when looking you gotta sell yourself |

And was I happy when I gave up the pizza job, that is a really sucky job huh, only someone that's done it could understand how crappy it is... I used career one and got a job in retail security to tie me over with uni and the like, there's tonnes of christmas casual vacancies going at the moment... oh and if u get really stuck, try the coles myer website, myer hires heaps of christmas casuals from november onwards... and you can do it all from home so you can be lazy like me!!! :hihi:

Dude, just revel in it.
I have been at uni for 6 years now and summer holidays are the best part!! I've got one exam left tomorrow. This year is different though as I am starting a full time job/internship with my uni degree. Stoke about that but am going to miss day time TV, waking up at lunch time and posting on FF all day. As for jobs, having just been through the employment process for a "proper" job, doing work expereince/summer vacation work in your chosen field is VERY VERY good impression for your prospective employers. You may even get a job with them. I have worked at Woolies in the bakery, at a newsagency, at a nightclub, at a golf club, on call for energex, for an accoutant, as a car park security guard and finally now as a settlement officer for a mortgage processing company. All in the space of about 4 years. Oh the memories. OR you could just use the time to work on your Gran Turismo skills? |

Mate, I'm in the same position as you. The past two years I jumped on to seek.com.au and other similar sites to look for factory work. Sounds boring as hell, and it usually is. But the pay is good, the working environments I have been in are all pretty clean etc and the people are usually friendly.
I've done things from packing hampers, picking orders, sorting mail, standing around doing stuff all, sitting around doing stuff all, and the best part is I was getting paid 15-20 odd an hour! And then more for overtime. There are a lot of those types of jobs around, and recently I have been looking at them paying at least 20 an hour. I maintained my casual job whilst working at both places (10-20 hours a week there, and 20-38 hours a week at the factory). Both times I mainly worked to go away on holiday though.

Time is far too precious to waste. Build a garden, work out - do something you know you're never going to have time to do when you're old and boring like me.

If you dont mind the outdoors try a labour hire company such as workforce extensions, you can pick what sort of work you want to do and when you want to do it. You will get a few days here and there, most work is vineyards, landscaping, labouring etc
We use them a fair bit for work and most are ok, the ones that do want to work anyway. It's surprising how many show up expecting to be paid for doing nothing though. They get sent home pretty quick and another booked for the next day to replace them |

See getting experience in this field is not that easy if you're an early years student, they don't just let you waltze in...I have enquired at numerous labs. They're not interested in first year guys. I think I might try that Manpower Extensions company, or what ever it was called, sounds interesting. Oh well I got to put any plans on hold, I got freaking tonsilitis, how ridiculous is that ! :

What area do you live? If I were you I'd do a bit of door knocking. (or at least a few ph calls) First call would be Institute of drug technology (IDT) in Wadhurst dve Boronia. They are pioneers in synthetic drugs (Morphine etc) and I think you'll find them quite approachable. Good luck anyhow.

See that's the problem for the moment, I live in the Western Suburbs, and nearly all of the Biotech companies are in South-Eastern suburbs.
Ah well, one day.

Isn't there a Biotech company in Cherry Lane Laverton Nth? (the name escapes me at the moment)
If no success there, I'd take Rodderz advice (who is also in this area, WEST) Pity your not doing engineering, or I maybe could have found you something!

yeh iv got a week left of my first year. iv been installing granite benchtops part time for the year, but that fell through about a month ago as my boss has gone into a bigger business and has no need for me anymore.
i just went onto career one and found a company who wanted ppl with general computer skills. i went in for an interview and am now working there part time as a computer operator in st kilda road. hoping to turn that into full time work over summer to fund some mods to my car. so yeh jus try all the job websites, theres always somethin on there
