Default water crisis.....re: washing your car

Now i know its ok to wash your car with a hose and trigger...which i do but i still feel guilty for washing my car....i also have 5 min showers.....turn off the tap when brusing.. heaps of little things to justify myself washing it....the only thing is i have to park my car under mango tree....constantly getting yellow stains all over and im sick of it....i haven't wahsed my car for 2 weeks due to bloody nosey neighbors giving me stares and wat not

does any one feel bad about washing there care or sacrifice a few showers a week to do it???

No! I feel bad having a filthy car due to years of State Government neglect of an important resource.
All of outer Sydney with rainwater tanks has more than adaquate water for car washing, but the major reservoirs are low and hoses are banned!!

No don't feel guilty the government make enough money thru revenue as we all know so there are very few things left that we can have pride in don't let them take that from you. Wash your car and feel proud of your machine.

I just installed another water tank (10,000L) ... will be using that for washing the car when it fills up ... WILL be getting another tank (maybe 2) when other other shed is built as well.

Can't have enough water tanks ... especially when there is no town water in my area.

I still am careful with water usage though (even with a 250,000L tank connected to the house.

But the water is going into the construction of new houses/areas for immigrants that keep getting shipped into this country and overpopulating the major areas (Sydney is a good example) ... we don't have enough resources to cope with this boom.

The problem with out catchment areas should have been fixed at least 20 years ago when the problem was originally brough up ... but the government didn't listen at the time.

I wash my car about once every two weeks using a bucket, the bucket saves alot of water insted of using the running hose. Ill often was the car down at Phillip Island when we go there for day trips because they have no water restrictions down there.

Hi Gozza, we have a new water / saver wash coming out within a week or so, it claims to use just 4 litres of water in a bucket, i have not tried it yet so i wont endorse it personaly but it has had rave reviews overseas,

in between washes though try using a quick detail with a microfibre cloth, this will help keep your yellow stains to a minimum.

Cheers
Pete

I enjoy driving the car around in a filthy state. Makes it look just that little bit more innocent ;)

Id never sacrifice personal hygiene. 10mins under the shower per day not too much to ask IMO.

I save water by letting the dishes pile up in the kitchen.... letting the bathroom get nice and dirty.... and letting the garden die. What can i say - just doing my part ;)

yeah anything that claims to reduce water sound good....but i can't get my head around not giving the car a rinse witht he hose

and to mechanik...i was thinking the other day about catchment areas and how after all the rain we do get...all i keep hearing is that the catchment areas didn't get anything....is this the government lying to make money off us .....besides tho why can't they have some sort of water channel thingy that hooks up to the dam underground

My opinion on all this is we are not in drought at all. We are in poor management. I live on the coast. There are hundreds of houses going in all the time over the coast and we have to all share the same water reserves. Obviously the dams will empty.

I save water where possible. I dont water the lawn and dont have a garden at all. But Ill be damned if im going to leave my cars filthy. Its all a trade off.

Oh and my solution is: all the water goes down the storm water and out to sea. Why not get some sort of pumping system on cirtain parts of the storm water system where possible, and pump what they can back into the dam. Surely would be more cost effective than building another billion dollar dam.

I got a high pressure water gun - a Karcher. Uses 5.5 litres/minute. So I rinse the car, then wash it with sudsy water in a bucket and rinse clean. Probably use no more than 30 litres for the whole wash. The water doesn't even make it to the drain 10 metres downhill from the car. The half bucket of dirty water afterwards goes in the garden

I take mine to work (the local Council) and use the pressure washer! Waste their water and their detergent and it is legal!

Sorry to say, I 'm not one bit guilty.

And no, I dont do much to help reduce water consumption...I enjoy LONG showers, wash my car often, with a pressure wahser, wash my driveway and paths with the pressure washer...I dont go out to WASTE water though, I'm not that bad...just not very conscious to save it.

Pfft I can't remember the last time I washed my car lol. I just chuck in a few bucks at the local 24hr car wash when I do though. I can't have long showers since we moved out of our house and there isn't any gas hot water here. But soon we will be moving back in. Rinnai Infinity-Got to love it!!

I think they said the ACT water supply is up to 63% capacity now so thats good. I think they also said were gonna only have low or no restrictions this summer too. There has been good rainfall of late around here too so starting to look good.

As Homer says "Water, water everywhere so let's all have a drink!" lol :

if your nosey neighbour gives you stares, stare them off back and warn them to mind their own business or they won't live to stare again. I do not respect nosey neighbours, you have to put them in their place.

I take mine to the bus depot. It's up high enough, and hidden from view enough, that we wash our cars and buses when we like.

Last night (this morning?), 2am on the way home from picking up Dad, the car wash on Canterbury Road was packed. Plenty of cabs, but also several nice Fords.

I use a watering can and bucket to do the car, bucket for all the cleaning agents, watering can to wash it all off.

Will admit that on the odd occasion I do use the hose though, its just too dirty and I need to blast it off. Only ever do it on grass (car always gets washed round the back on the lawn), so it waters the lawn as well.

And I only ever do it late afternoon for 2 reasons - stops the water evaporating and its too bloody hot to wash it any other time!
