NRMA pushes for road safety funding boost

The New South Wales Government is being lobbied to use the money it raises from speed cameras to fund other road safety measures.

The NRMA is trying to gather 10,000 signatures to have the proposal debated in State Parliament.

NRMA President Wendy Machin says speed cameras raise more than $140 million each year.

"We believe that if you're going to put cameras in there and tell motorists it's about improving safety then it's a fair cop to take that money and put it back into road safety programs," Ms Machin said.

"In essence it's about the government putting their money where their mouth is."

The Police Association of NSW is backing the push.

Association President Scott Weber says putting more police on the road should be a priority.

"At the moment the money just goes into this eternal and alleged black hole. What we need to do is make sure that speed camera funds go back to where they're needed," Mr Weber said.

"That is building up our roads, making sure there's more highway patrol officers out there actually preventing road trauma and on top of that making sure there's further education."

Where do I sign?

This is what should have been done since the inception of Traffic Camera's.

Driver Education programs could be easily funded by the revenue made.

If they put every cent of speed camera profit into such programs, I actually wouldn't mind paying a speeding fine (sounds weird). Seems like a "Bing!" just went off in my head - a great idea. Now i'm wondering why it took so long to come about!

If they deny this, then we really all do know what the ACTUAL agenda is!

My Guess to sign up you need to be a little active.

On this NRMA page there is a PDF that is downloadable.
I reckon you download this, sign it with your mates, and sent to NRMA motoring services (call 13 11 22 to get an address)

I think it would be wiser just to lobby for an increase in research funding for road safety, not link it to a fine collection.

What would happen if indeed the mob here were right: speed cameras have nothing to do with safety. When the population stops speeding and of course the accidents continue to pile up, where is the money for research going to come from?

Easy. The government will change laws so speed cameras make them money again.

There's nothing that says this has to be the only source of funding.
It's pretty simple I would have thought. While they are making lots of money (which is when they are most needed) the roads will get a large injection of extra funding, when there's less income from them (which means the situation has been fixed) then there's not as much extra funding, and roads can be funded by the normal budget source.
