Default Importing vehicles form NZ

Any one had experience in importing a vehicle from NZ?

I have brought a car from Wellington and would like to get it over but have no idea on the process, I do not really want to be involved apart from supplying details etc.

The car is not running and will be on a trailer, I was thinking it would possibly be easier to load it into a 20 foot shipping container, again I have no idea.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah you will have to get it in a container.

They do roll on/roll off, but the car has to be going and with current WOF etc for that.

I toyed with bringing my WRX race car over a few months back when I moved, but was going to cost too much, so I just sold it.

I think it was going to cost me around $5-7000 NZ$ to bring mine over.

You can get some different vehicles over there than here... as they have slightly different rules with imports etc etc....!

Yup we sure do!

Pretty much anything goes, just has to be less than 10 years old.

But imports are WAY cheaper than here in Aus, so paying the fee will probably be worth it.

Shipping was about $1200 when I bought my WRX over..
Rules have changed .. I had to spend 3 months in NZ with Au drivers licence..
First get an import approval form etc..To offload when arrives here...
MUST be clean inside and out !!!
Or get a specialized import company to do it...

Thanks for the link, These guys take care of everything except the Application for approval to import a vehicle, witch is the main gobble de gook I was hoping to avoid, does anyone know who specializes in this?

i looked into bringing my ute over and its just a monumental head********.

cos my ute was modifeid getting it on the road was going to be an absolute mission, worse than physically getting it here.

hence why its still in nz now.

Im not concerned with getting the vehicle on the road at this stage, its a race car and all I want to do is get it over here. does anyone know a specialist in this field? Ive tried to ring the import phone line but its a recording and the only options are an email address or they will send you an " information pack " all I want to do is talk to a human..........

I would think this is the part you cannot avoid, after all it is you that is importing the car and you that must sign the declaration, not the shipping company. This is why the Dept of Infrastructure recomends getting approval before shipping, the shipping company will gladly bring the car over, but unless you have approval it will just sit in the Customs holding yard....

Interesting bit of info for you about importing a race car from the Dept of Infrastructures booklet....


5.10 Racing Vehicles - Part 10 of the Application Form
Rally Use / Closed Circuit Racing

Before approving an application, the Administrator must be satisfied that the vehicle will only be used for rally/race purposes.

Import applications for rally/race use will only be considered where the vehicle will be used in serious competition, generally at professional level. Where a particular vehicle model is readily available in the Australian market, an Import Approval will not be granted unless there are compelling reasons to justify why it is necessary to import a vehicle to compete in events in Australia. The fact that a vehicle may be on an eligibility list for an event is not, of itself, a reason to justify the granting of an Import Approval.

At a minimum, the following criteria must be met:

 Eligible vehicles for rally/race use are those homologated by the Federation Internationale de l‟Automobile (FIA). These vehicle models can be found listed at www.fia.com/homologations/Voit_Pays.html.
 Under normal circumstances, applicants will be restricted to importing a single vehicle and acceptable reasons will need to be provided to import another vehicle for rally/race use.
 Road vehicles for rally use are imported on the condition that they will only be used in the course of competition, practice associated with competition and transport to and from a rally location.
 The applicant must lodge with their application a statement that the vehicle will only be used for rally purposes together with a copy of a current CAMS R3 or higher-grade licence. For closed circuit racing the applicant must lodge with their application a statement that the vehicle will only be used for closed circuit racing purposes together with a copy of a current CAMS C3 or higher grade licence.

In addition, the applicant will need to provide evidence of a professional or high-level involvement in rally/race sport, including:

 details of events in which the applicant has driven a rally/race car;
 details of specific events in which the applicant proposes to compete in the car for which the import application is submitted;
 details of the rally/race club or organisation of which the applicant is a member and the length of membership; and
 if the vehicle is a model available in the Australian vehicle market, justification for the need to import the vehicle (cost of the vehicle in the domestic market will not generally be considered an acceptable justification).

Documents required to be submitted with the application form:

 $50.00 application fee
 purchase documents
 copy of CAMS R3 or higher licence or CAMS C3 or higher
 evidence of participation in rallying or closed circuit racing and
 evidence of vehicles homologation,
 certified picture ID of the importer or responsible officer if a company (if you have not imported in the last 12 months you will need to provide your ID again)

Thanks for the info,

My car was manufactured in 1963, the first question on the import doc's ask's if the car was built before 1989 ( I think ) if you tick yes , you then proceed to question 12, which is where you sign.

I would really like to talk to someone and clarify before I submit anything.

You have to go through the GOV authority and do the paper work yourself...
