MINI will enter Formula 1 in 2009 with a smaller, lighter bespoke car powered by a hi-tech turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the company announced today.
Engineered in Australia and designed to run on a new and unique never before revealed environmentally friendly blend of petrol and 10 percent Eucalyptus oil, the MINI F1 car will follow in the wheel tracks of several great Australian names at the pinnacle of Motor Racing, as well as ride on the back of the successful MINI CHALLENGE one-make series.

“MINI has been given a special task, to engineer the eco-friendly F1 car of the future,” said a MINI spokeswoman, Sue Japantsov. “The car will be rolled out in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of MINI next year.”

A special fuel additive known only as ‘KBERLS’, derived from a waste product found near the trees was formulated by MINI, and will ensure there is no trademark blue vapour trail from the exhaust.

“The exhaust gas will be pleasant to the olfactory glands.” Ms Japantsov said.

The new MINI race car will be designed by Australians living in Australia and will use fine grade Australian paper and Tasmanian Oak pencils for the initial design.

Wind tunnel testing will take place in the Sound Tube near Ascot Vale, Melbourne in August.

“To keep our carbon footprint low we will run recently developed ellipsoid wheels and tyres, while a new lightweight, high-tech bio-degradable body structure made from renewable resources such as wheat-germ husks and carbonfibre will ensure our car is light and disappears fast.” she said.

“In fact, the new composite material for the body will be known as Highfibre-Carbonfibre. It’s a bit like HD TV. Just like the old TV but sharper and sexier, and more expensive.”

The new MINI racer will be painted black all over, to suit the new night format of races, especially at Albert Park. MINI ChromeLine exterior detailing will be used to help provide a visual outline for the TV cameras to follow.

Powering the MINI racer will be a development of the 155 kW John Cooper Works 1.6-litre engine that powers the current MINI Clubman and MINI Cooper S road cars.

“To meet the requirements of the new generation eco-friendly series, we will have to reduce our capacity to 1.2-litres (current F1 cars run V8s with 2.4-litre capacities), but our four-cylinder engine will be lighter so lap times should be relatively similar.” Ms Japantsov said.

“The car will look like a typical MINI, er, with the body removed, but has a rear-mounted engine and front-wheel drive. Thus it will retain the MINI concept of a wheel at each corner, go-kart handling and of course superb power to weight ratio. We even have a new “Oxford” diet devised by our colleagues in Finance to help keep the car’s weight down, not to mention that of the driver.” Ms Japantsov said.

Speaking of whom, MINI is also announcing a test driver line-up today. Mr S. Tigg from Great Britain will be the lead tester, backed up by the services of a yet to be named local driver.

“Securing the services of Mr Tigg, who is something of a white knight for us, was a huge relief,” Ms Japantsov said. “He’s always in top gear on the track.”

The search for the local driver is yet to get underway.
