Default "Mythbusters" tonight - beat the radar...

A great reason to catch "Mythbusters" tonight (SBS 7.30pm). Tonight the boys test a number of myths surrounding beating police radar. These include hanging a disco ball from the rear vision mirror ( : ), covering the entire car with aluminium foil and also painting the car with flat black paint.

Should be interesting....

They tested 2 myths:
* That you can make your own levitation machine (hovercraft) from old vacuum cleaners - Proven
* That if you jump just before a falling lift hits the ground, you will survive - Busted (poor old Buster ended up in about 4 pieces : )

Too late....

Well not a Lancer, a Civic. And yes, I think the radar detector myths were bound to be busted, the cops weren't there for no reason. Imagine if a couple worked, and it was televised world wide?? :

i saw on bbc's top gear that if you go 160m/hr red light cameras can't get the second pic to get your speed reading.

Last nights show on Fox they expoded CD's, apparently if you have a 52X drive and a machine that can read the data fast enough the CD explodes... PROVEN they destroyed a few CD's and buckled the buggery out of the steele case over the drive...

I've heard if you either hit the brakes or just floor it (the more common option that I hear of) just as you are going past the speed gun it can't get you - it takes multiple readings off the vehicle and if you're accelerating/decelerating at a fast enough rate, each reading is too different for it to calculate an accurate average so it won't give a reading. Of course your timing has to be right and your actions a gonna be obvious to the cop. Interesting to see if it'd work from a technical point of view though.

ive actually just done a bit of research on RADAR guns (as i want to get one to see what speed our rc trucks go) and the basic principle of the gun is that when you are in its sights the operator will pull the trigger and realease it after you are in a close enough range to the car. this could be from 400m away from the trigger pull to literally 5 meters away before the trigger is released. once released, the gun gives an AVERAGE reading of your speed, or it can also display the HIGHEST speed you were doing in that time. by slowing down you will get a lower average but it may not be enough to get you off.

this is all RADAR hand held guns that point at the car. newer systems may be different but i doubt if the averaging has changed at all.

i've used a police radar gun, and i only had to hold the target on the car for a few seconds before it gave the current speed of the vehicle.....never had to hold a trigger for that long to gain an average or wahtever....maybe they've changed since i used it...i dunno

I had a mate who had that happen, drive exploded, CD shot across the room. He even got in the paper after it wasn't replaced under warranty. ing_sm

Yeah, I got to use a hand-held police radar a few years ago and it only took 2-3 seconds to lock on and register a speed.

Yes I've also heard about this too, from another source (forgot where). They say this is the reason European cars are limited to 155mph (250 km/h). Anyone with a Ferrari wanna run some speed cameras for us???? :

Oh the humanity! I think I got clocked by a speed camera on Monday afternoon :gren:

But the whole reason I was speeding is cause I wanted to get a good look at the TE50 that was ahead of me in the traffic! So not looking forwards from any letters from the revenue dept ing_sm

Best show on TV. Loved the creations last week with the home-made hovercraft test. Very cool, all they needed was some form of netting on the holes in the skirts to stop the sand getting in and they would have been perfect!
