Default Hail damage

Hi Guys

Just wondering, it's been hailing in Perth on and off since this afternoon, and I don't have a carport, or any other way of protecting the AU.

What sort of size and density would you expect to damage paintwork?

Have you got a spare doona or similar? Not a perfect solution, but will help if they are just large enough to mark it.

No idea on what size would damage it? Im going to guess just larger than the ones that wont damage it.

Be thankful, its not good if your car is outside.

It was hailing in Belmont as I typed the thread up. I haven't seen it in years until today.

Fairly small, probably 3-4mm across. It scared the hell out of my daughter, since it was very loud on the tin roof so the mrs went outside and caught some to show her.

If it does hail properly, doonas and blankets will give some protection. Anything to absorb the energy of the hail. For big hail, drive it through your lounge room wall!

Obviously for future reference get a cheap car cover from super cheap or the likes and if you have access to it a big roll of bubble wrap to put under the car cover

We had a hail storm in 1991. Hail stones ranged in size from the size of a blueberry to cricket ball size. My dad who's a panel beater had to repair around 45 cars(and he only did about half of them), 4 of which were ours. Nearly all the cars he repaired needed new bonnets and boots and some serious work done on the roofs. The storm snuck up on everyone and was gone just as quickly, but those who did try to cover their cars with something didnt manage to avoid damage either, the only cars that were safe were the ones that were garaged.
An extreme case I know, but if the hail stones are big enough, nothing except a garage will stop them damaging the car.
If I recall nearly all the houses in town who had iron roofs needed to get them replaced as well, and lots of windows.

I had the car resprayed due to hail.

Had to replace the roof, bonnet, etc. Basically pretty much anything that was bolted on the the shell.

Hair was about 20mm I think.

I got cought in a hail storm a couple of years back, most size of small marbles, honestly thought the glass was going to break, scared the cr?p out of us, left with about 50 small but noticeable dents all over.

When I'm out and it looks nasty I head for the nearest undercover car park.

Mate , do what you can but if worse comes to worse it can be easily fixed.

My car was 2 months old when a hailstorm hit while my wife was picking up the kids from school. Roof, bonnet, boot and side pillars all damaged. Insurance company put it in the hands of a paintless dent repairer that specialises in hail damage and you can't even tell....just cost me the excess.
