Default Timing chains

OK this isnt Ford related ..... buuttttttttt.........

Do all engines have Timing chains &/or belts ?????????

A girl at work today took her car ...... a Pulsar I think to have it serviced ...... the young fella who did it told her that the timing belt would need changing after 80k to 100k .......

She then rang a Nissan dealer & was told they dont have them ......... If they dont what do they have to regulate timing .......

I know this sounds like a normal useless chick question but it had me stumped because I thought all engines had a timing impliment of some kind :togo:

nah it will definetly have a timing belt or chain,(im pretty sure there belt driven, OHC?) unless it has direct gears like an old holden 6 but i doubt it.

Not sure what model it is .... its not brand new ..... but not old either ..........

To be honest I havent really taken much notice of it ... I know its BLUE :P hhehehehehee

I will have to find out more tomorrow I think ........ I know she knows nothing about it ..... she took it to the mechanic for an oil change ..... like ... yup OK sweety ... you were just ripped off .......

I thought the pulsar's used a timing belt... and 80-100k was normal replacement time for the belt. If it fails, it is more expensive as pistons and valves finally say G'day. It's happened on one of my previous cars.

Have a look in the owners manual, as they list (or most I've seen do) what is required at each service. It should list timing belt change at the 80k or 100k service if it is required.

If your friend is ringing a dealer to query what her mechanic said, the dealer probably would not be interested as they were not getting her business.

the pulsar engine will have a timing belt, the japs have been using twin cam on their engines for ages, not like us slow-to-develop aussies still churning out SOHC and multi-point in the early 90's...

If its a single OHC Pulsless it will have a chain.

If it IS a belt, don't neglect to change it - my grandfather's CA20 (beast!!!) powered Pintara

(bought as a 3 month old demo back in 89, as a just-about straight swap for a mint Vitamin C E-49 Charger... can i hear ya say "ripped"???) ... but that's beside the point

anyways - the pintara DIDN'T get its 80,000k timing belt change. At about 85 or 90,000, the belt snapped or slipped, taking the whole motor with it... valves hitting pistons etc. Nasty.

This is true Nick, changing Timing Belts at the required intervals is critical. Same thing happened to my Dads RS2000 Escort when he had it. Lucky the Valves didn't get too friendly with the Pistons.

Same thing happened to me in a RS2000... except valves and pistons got very friendly... :gren:

all pulsars after 1989 ish will have a timing belt, the nissan/open family engines are the only ones with out a belt and have a chain from what i can recall.

and a mechanic telling her this if her car has done 80-90k would not be ripping her off, in fact probably saving her money in the long run.

not everyone is devious sneek and dont want return business.

so anything after 89 would make it N13 onwards i think

Probably told her to get the headlights refilled as well.:

also age can also be a factor - if it is a low km car, then a certain time period will apply for the lifespan of the belt. This may require the belt to be changed before the specified km mark. Generally a car with a timing belt needs it changed by 100,000kms.

OK I have more details of the car now ..... gotta luv the net at work :P

The car is a 1998 Nissan Pulsar LX. Its done about 90k.

So has it a belt or a chain & when does it need doing ?????

If its a belt it has to be done at 100k or if it goes, serious engine damage can happen, being a 98 model I would strongly suspect it has a timing belt.

Yes it would have a belt and YES get it changed before 100,000, as said before not all mechanics are out to rip you off, and this will save you plenty of money over having to replace the whole engine if the belt snaps
the cam/rocker cover should have a plate on it somewhere saying when the belt needs to be changed. this plate should also have the date of the belt change engraved on it by the mechanic.

its definatly got a belt and should be changed. im a mechanic and make sure all my clients with belt drive cams are done on time . one of the few exceptions is older ohc toyotas .that are free running meaning when it all goes wrong pistons and valves dont get too frendly
