In my opinion the list of banned cars needs to be revised.

First of all, I can drive my EF, weighing just over 1500kg stock standard 158kw. BUT, I can't drive my old mans 79 LTD with the big scary 5.8L 351 that outputs a whopping 147kw. Not to mention the car weighs probably close to 2000kg. I can still drive 192kw BA-BF xr6s, 193kw honda s2000s. But I can't drive a 90 odd kw turbo nissan exa. I can drive my old mans 2.8L 900kg Pontiac Fiero, but I still can't drive his LTD.

This makes it hard for my old man because we use the LTD to travel out west to our property, it is a 6 hour trip and it is a bit hard on him making him do the whole 6 hour drive himself, knowing that I could get into a lot of **** if I drove. I applied for an exemption twice, but both times it was rejected. They don't understand that a hyundai excel has a better power to weight ratio than the LTD and probably has a higher top speed too. The excels tend to crumple in accidents too, this thing is solid, yet I still can't drive it.

They need to actually think about the cars that they are putting on the list, rather than just going through and banning every single turbo and V8 out there. Some of the cars I can understand why they are on there, I remember when I was on my Ls and I was driving my mums xr6t (she was in the car of course) and I gave the car a little squirt. I know that if I had an xr6t on my ps that I would probably be dead by now, because those things are phenominal. The RTA needs to do some research before making bandaid fixes.

Improve driver training and remove the stupid restrictions... The laws are a knee jerk reaction to public pressure to do something about all the accidents that P- platers were having. ACA and Today tonight don't help with their one sided view of p platers with their crappy stories, but as usual govt's don't like spending money on preventive measures, just impose new laws with new fines so they can make money for themselves

Stupid RTA. Ive rang them up twice regarding these laws and Ive got two different stories.

The second bloke I spoke to said I could change the intake (e.g. from I6 Intake to XR6t/F6 phoon intake) but I couldn't change the air filter due to an emissions act or something...is this true? He said changing the amount of air coming into the engine wouldn't affect the performance but changing the filter would? :S

These laws are silly. P platers can drive 190kw BF XR6, 195kw VE SV6, 200kw Toyota Aurion's but they cant drive (insert example of much less powerful, and much slower vehicle here).

How is displaying P platers on the outside going to save lives?

As many others have said it is a knee jerk reaction from community pressure. Hasn't really fixed the problem. A drivers liscence doesn't reflect your ability to drive it shows that you can manage traffic well. Whats needed is much more professional driver training.

Cheers.

So true,

Me and my mates couldn't have V8's so a six war began: one mate has a HZ Kingswood with exaust and extractors and Holley, another a VS with exaust, cold air, extractors another mate with EA Falcon with Tickford head, XR8 diff, and a crap load of mates with VL commondores.

I chose a AU Fairmont Ghia Tickford Enhanced with VCT putting about 168kw at the crank and believe me it's going to be climbing.
My car is faster than most V8's on the street (crappy Holden 5L) and from what I've heard is no slower than the V8 option of my car.

These laws are ridiculous I was going to buy a 1968 Fairmont with 302 Windsor and column shift not cos its fast but cos I like the sound of a V8 and the style of old Fords but nope guess Im going to have to settle with my much faster Tickford Hot Six.

Do these laws mean I can buy a Valiant Charger R/T that can do the quarter in 14 seconds........................

Man you guys get it bad. I hate driving in NSW as it is, let alone to be actually licenced there. I could drive whatever I wanted on my Ps and I did. Bought my first turbo when I was 19 and boy it's fun! :

These laws are just going to mean alot more "sleeper" cars around. BA XT's with F6 motor and gearbox and stock rims/exhaust tip.
Like already said, get more driver training out on skidpans in high performance cars.
More centres like the Paul Morris one with that massive turntable would be a better investment, they have enough money from fines etc.

Obviously the only people voting "no" on this thread are those un-effected. Ie, Gold or Black licence holders who just dont know what it's like to be targeted by every patrol car that can see you...
ummm...Not quite....Gold licence holder here and I think that the intention of the laws are good, but the way they have been implemented has been poor. I fully agree with everything that's been said about how N/A Cars can often output more power than older turbo's, or turbo deisel cars. and I've been there, was a P Plater with a 2002 AU3 XR6 in Bright Blue, so I know what you mean, got pulled over up to 2-3 times a week just to 'check the car' and make sure it wasn't stolen etc.

something along the lines of that binnie...but the chance of them actually approving that is slim to nil...there has to be a pretty serious reason, like, my lowered car won't drive through the mud at work, and tow a horse float and trailer at the same time, so I have to buy a v8 Landcruiser...or something stupid like that.

sleekism, if you want a car that will humble your mates offerings, there are some subtle mods that you can do to keep your car unnoticed while still offering VL beating performance. I'm not sure how long you've got left on your P's but some smart mods should help you slip under the radar of local plod.
I would recommend a set of extractors (Pacemaker or XForce), keep the standard exhaust from cat back, XR6T snorkel ($32 from Ford) and get a flash tuner with a custom edit. Make sure you get the stock heatshield modified to fit over the extractors.
Like so : http://www.fordforums.com.au/showpos...1&postcount=99
If that's not enough, then 3.91 diff gears, LSD, and hi-stall should do it.

Thanks hot xr6!

How much power though do you think I will get with extractors but a stock exaust?

Im so ****ed of with RTA I went to the RTA they told me to call tech services, tech services told me to call general enquiries and general enquiries told me to call tech services.

WTF?

On the street the scene is changing very strangely there are ******* everywhere driving souped up Hyundais and Lancers with huge woofers and exaust tips but in the shadows and back roads lurk the sleeper Falcons and Commodores.

The RTA have no idea what theyve created!

Looks a bunch of wingers that think P plate time is a life sentence.

In reality it's a very short period in a persons life behind a wheel, wait it out and go buy whatever you want.

The testing system for P platers need to be completely overhauled. All they do is check that you know your road rules. They don't really test out your driving ability if you know what I mean.

P platers test should be something that tests your reaction time and what type of reaction you have in an emergency situation and how you overtake and such.

The complete system is a joke, the rta is a joke, the government is a joke, P plate laws, the police and most drivers on the road are jokes.

You deal with ********* every day, get over it and move on.
I hate the RTA with the no clue idiots behind the counter,I have no respect for police(some exceptions though) and their bullshit laws they enforce,I think all the politics behind it is rediculous, and the drivers on the road arent helping, not just P platers. And we cant forget about those one-eyed pricks in the media.

My work involves driving, driving alot.. sometimes 4,000k's a week. I see a hell of a lot of idiots on the road, P platers, full licence and cops. Im a P plater, but I stopped wearing my P plates on the car and guess what I dont get pulled over, and my car is extremely loud Ive sat 10k over the limit and not been done, whack a P plate on and $100 says that same cop will pull me over no if's but's or maybe's.

Ive had a bad run with cops and the rta, which is why I have said what I have.

going off what stidds said, the whole system is a joke.

you can hardly see my p-plates. the front one lies practically flat on my dash, and the rear is one of those stick on ones behind tinted glass.

ive gone past radar on the motorways 10 over the limit (even more on the p-plate limit) i was travelling the same speed as traffic. its safer. and the copper didnt even blink. prolly cause he didnt see my plate.

ive been followed by cops too who didnt give 2 shits about my obscured rear p plate.

why? because i drive a family sedan. it has exhaust which is reasonably loud. but i dont do anything stupid when coppers are following me.

ive never been pulled over for licence checks or anything random like that.

whereas my mate in his lowered EB with rims and exhaust, always pulled over, and defected.

it depends on the car. they pick on the kids with the "hot" cars and ignore all the idiots in stock standard cars that cannot drive for ****. cutting people off driving along oblivious to all around them.
