I meet these "holier than thou" helpdesk types all the time. Some of them just refuse to believe that you might have been using the product longer than they have and only need them cause they have admin access.

Cmon Hunter, you cant judge the world based on the people that ring helpdesk for a start. Thats like sitting in a hospital emergency room wondering why everyone coming in is sick.

As for IT people not wanting to learn new things guys, dont confuse resistance for change with time management. Should I dedicate my time to learn a product that wont run on any of my current fleet of computers, that users are unfamiliar with, that will undoubtably have problems running our custom corporate apps and that hasnt even seen an initial service pack yet?

Computer says No.

Huh? :

You've totally lost me.

I was commenting about something someone said "...but people are by and large dumb and don't want to learn new things"

If that's what IT staff, such as yourself, think of people/customers that need help, then god help them because IT people that think like that wont.

Pardon me then mate, I got the impression you were taking a shot at what I said to, I think, the same poster.

I never generalise client users as "dumb", or any other similar trait. However, whether I'm on server support, or service desk, it is easy to get frustrated when simple instructions are deemed hard to follow:

"Could you click on the start button in bottom left hand corner of your screen please?"

"Start button....hmmmm.....what's it look like?'

That will get me every time

Vista is resource hungry run 1 gig of ram minimum in 32 bit.
run 2 gig of ram in 64 bit, do this and it should run ok.
For those of you who are thinking of giving it a try on the Microsoft website there is a small program you can download it runs a check on all your hardware tells you what it well support and what it wont in regards to drivers.
My brother has a ADSL modem 2 to 3 years old no support.

You have to get an updated version of Alcohol 120 for it to work alongside various other software. I have Alcohol 120 working on Vista.

Yea...it pays to actually look into what will work on Vista before you install it...most software vendors have updated to Vista compatibility, or at least posted on their website informing of an update coming...

Can't understand why you would format your drive to lose all your data...thats not MS's fault...

Firstly, how do you format a drive you can't recognise and secondly, why wouldn't you back them up before you formatted?

If anyone's upgrading from XP pro to Vista home premium? Vista won't upgrade, it will rename the Windows directory to Windows.old, place program files and the individual users directories under the windows.old directory.

This way you can recorver documents, favourites etc etc.

Another hit for those networking. Vista uses the Network name "Workgroup" and XP uses "MShome". I couldn't get Vista to list/map a C drive till I'd passwork protected the computers.

The main things to download are drivers before upgrading. If you can't find a Vista driver? Make sure you get the latest XP one. Then install the driver in Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode. I've got my sound drivers installed this way. Gigabyte haven't quite got drivers for mine yet they had them for my kids PC.

Quite a bit of old software that runs under XP won't run under Vista due to compatability issues. I've probably used 5-10gb of bandwidth updating software and re-updating drivers as they become available.

I've never put my PC's into sleep mode prior to Vista. With XP they tended to have issues waking up. Both machines on Vista wake up nicely. I'm impressed with it's power saving features as my kids PC has a damn noisey Maxtor 5400rpm slave hard drive. Which it shuts down even when "C" on that machine is still in use.

The only annoying bits I don't like about Vista are some of the java issues which are being sorted via updates from java.com and some of the security features are a bit over the top. I've already done registry edits and the likes.

For some reason my Liteon DVDRW would have issues initializing. Vista/Nero 7 has sorted that too. I had the latest Nero 6.6 prior.

If your not real computer/software savy? A Vista upgrade can turn into an absolute nightmare easily enough. I lost my net connection for awhile (prob 3 days) as it was connected via USB. All sorted with a bit of re-routing cables and using Ethernet. It worked on and off at odd times of the day/night.

in a nutshell -

ive gone from a P3 running wind2000 and after all the crap that gets onto your system (spyware/viruses etc) : I went to the computer shop and looking at the newest range of pc's. Something with a bit of power and memory was going to set me back $2500 - I strolled into Domayne, and started looking hard at the Macs to see what they can offer. I was quite surprised when i found out that the same sort of system (dual core) was cheaper than PC and i got a 20inch flat screen with NO tower to worry about all the cables. I was daunted, once i turned it on. I kept saying to myself right click (but theres only 1 button) on mighty mouse. It took me about 2 weeks to get around the operating system (OSX Tiger) which Vista is a copy of! But it IS REALLY USER FRIENDLY !
theres many little applications around that make it even better - like screen capture ( where how many times have you MSexcel and you want it as an image - ok on pc, ctrl+prtscr , open paint , right click paste , save as .jpg ) Mac = drag select box around ! thats it - it saves as jpg png pdf everything for you !
Please , go to your nearest Mac dealer and try it out ! Even the new OSX - Leopard is due for release shortly .. and you can run windows xp if you like buy splitting the memory. Ive done that - so i can still use the windows applications / programs but ive disconnected the internet connection just incase more viruses come on the windows side of things. Oh and deleting a prog ! Drag it out of the dock(start menu) that easy !

I think macs are fantastic except for one thing. If something goes wrong hardware wise prepare to be without it for a few weeks. I manage a large network with 200+ Windows PCs and 5 macs in the Graphics Department. I have a hardware issue with one of the PC's I make a phone call and someone from hp or IBM is there within a day with the required part (Admittedly with hp you have to convince the nice man in india that you are not a moron first). If something goes wrong with one of the Macs, away it goes for 2+ weeks.

Can't say I'm unhappy with Vista HP. The constant access requests are a bit over the top. Everything is the same with different names.

OK, well, I've just managed to install Vista Ultimate (yes, it's legit before anyone asks).

I think most of the issues seen in here seem to be related to dodgy BIOS's from PC Manafacturers (heres a little bit of techy for ya, Vista "validates" your copy based on a certificate installed into your PC's BIOS).

My Vista is running 5x faster than XP, with Full Aero graphics (thats the ****y transparency you basic guys dont get). Not a single crash (except when I experimented with using Audigy Drivers for my unsupported SBLive Value (which worked btw), and all my games run fine.

IT EVEN RUNS NEED FOR SPEED 2 SE! I haven't been able to play that for years.

Yes the navigation is a bit ****y, but once you get used to it its extremely handy (being able to click on a navigation button to skip back to a folder freaking owns).

Networking hassles are non existent. Thanks to the network centre you seriously don't need to do anything. And if you do have to enter anything, it just asks you then continues on its way.

Security is good. Windows Defender is an excellent snapin, as is the new Windows Update system. It still uses IE as a browser, but seems to be more refined and stable than IE7 for XP.

Memory usage is pretty bad (but then again im using Aero). With desktop, sidebar and a few non-memory intensive apps its using just over half a gig of physical ram. I have two gigs though so it doesnt phase me

Application and Driver compatibility is second to none. Seriously, it's so smart that it detects if a program or driver didn't run or install correctly, and offers to fiigure out a way to make it work. It's worked for me for every problem i've had so far. Top score for this feature

Normally, I'm not very pro-ms, and working in Technical Support I have a fair idea of the pros and cons of most OS's. I can honestly say Vista is the best MS OS so far...

I will bold all the reasons you are having the problems you are experiencing.
