Default Mustang advice

hey guys, my dad and i are in the market for mustangs. now he wants a k-code 65 fastback GT and im after a 67 coupe. my dad is a physio and has treated a bloke who owns Just mustangs in melbourne so he has been having a chat to him about it, but i hav a few queries.
Now, as i am aware as of now, it would be cheaper to buy them over in america and import them over to Australia. ive been on many australian websites looking for mustangs and when comparing them to the american sites they are damn cheap over there compared to AUS. So my question to you guys is, would it be worth it if my dad and i import 2-3 cars to Australia in a container and go from there? or just save up and pay the extra for mustangs in australia?
i need a bit of help with this so your help and knowledge would be much appreciated

Being a mustang owner, I suggest buying one here in oz that someone has done a resto on. It will be far cheaper, way way less headaches.

Simply change the things you dont like to what you want.

yer i see where you are coming from but if i do that i will have to wait a while to find the one i want and at the right price. whereas in america they have a lot of 67 coupe models at the right price when converted to aussie dollars.

K Code fastbacks command big $$$ if you can find one. Finding one in the US is getting harder, and requires a great deal of research. There are a loads of scams, and lots of people have been burnt with false claims as to condition and VIN. Have you priced a container that can fit 3 cars? You can offset the cost of the container by bringing in parts for the cars, or get an importer to bring them in for you.
Regardless of descriptions online, never trust what they say. A lot of people have been burnt.
As for 67 coupes, what are you looking for in one? LHD/RHD? Rego? 6/8? Auto/Man? Stock/Modified? What price range?

yer well im not fussed with LHD/RHD, rego yes/no again not fussed, after an 8 in manual or auto and stock. price range i am unsure of as prices vary so im going to keep looking around until i find the right price.

Hey mate me and dad have just imported one from the states. 66 coupe it a nice orginal. much cheaper to buy but by the time you do a conversion (if you want to do it) fix a few little problems here and there. The mistake we made was having a freind have a look at in a hurry (not his fault ours) and not seeing the car ourselves. helps if you no some1 who can bring them over aswell for you. paid $6500 US landed here owes about $12000 with about $6-7k worth of work on it

I was going to import to NZ direct from the USA but luckily my 'Cuda popped up locally. If I were you, I'd wait it out. Mustangs are very common in muscle/pony car terms. Trade-Me (NZ) has about 15-25 Mustangs on 24/7/365 so Australia will have a far better selection.

Another thing, if you buy one already restored/built/Registered that is a big bonus. Having to get a car VINed can become a nightmare in some cases can not be made road legal. Don't forget, NZ has a 12.5% tax on the overall price (car and shipping value). Not sure if Aussie is the same but I'm thinking it would be. So if I buy a $20K car with $5K shipping I'll have to pay customs tax of around $4,600. No small chunk of change.

To sum it up, it's easier, safer and usually faster to buy locally. If you buy overseas who's going to view it on your behalf? Take photos? Kick tires? If you're thinking about buying site unseen, forget about it. It's suicide. You will save money buying direct from the US but along with the comes stress and potential nightmares. It's easy to do if you can get everything together: someone to view the car, a reliable seller, good price, right car, all the paper work (very important) etc.

yer thanks guys for the reply, i understand were u are coming from and at this point we are unsure if we wil go over ourselves to look, or we might get someone (importer) to check over there while he is there. As it seems to me it is definately worth it, LHD im not worried about because its a 30+ year old car so im not going to bother with the extra money.
In the meantime feel free to keep adding comments, we're not too desperate at this stage as we were just after a little advice from you guys who have experiences with importers etc.
