Toyota Unassailable sleep:

Neil McDonald & Marton Pettendy
5 December 2006
www.goauto.com.au

With Toyota's market dominance for the year all but sewn up courtesy of a 61,190-vehicle sales lead to November, all interest has swung to the performance of its key rivals, GM Holden and Ford.

As the year winds up, Holden will claim the number two with Ford secure in third, but their fortunes have been dented by the arrival of several newcomers and the continuing downturn in the large car segment.

To November, Ford's overall market share is down from 13.1 per cent last year to 12.1 per cent, following slower November sales of both Falcon (3447 sales versus 5064 for the same month last year) and Territory (1339 v 2224 – 40 per cent down).

It's a similar story at Holden, whose market share to November has shrunk from 17.8 per cent last year to just 15.2 per cent in 2006. Commodore sales remain well down on 2005 levels, with 5238 sold in November – down 0.7 per cent from 5276 in November 2005.

Holden's new Captiva SUV contributed 554 sales in November, for a year-to-date total of 947, while Astra and Vectra sales plummeted last month.

But while Ford and Holden sales were down 19.8 and 11.5 per cent respectively last month, Toyota experienced a 13.5 per cent lift in November, when it sold 20,247 vehicles for the month - 7500 more than its nearest rival, Holden.

Great sales result for the Falcon and the Aurion this month

Those Hilux sales look a bit one-off tho.

This is a site with a table of sales.
In the US 1.2 Million cars sold last month!

Ford has sold more YTD cars than toyota and chrysler, but are lower for the month.

BadMac, Falcon Freak has killed his computer - i think he'll be out of action for a while.

In regards to Toyota filling 6 of the top 10 positions... get used it! Everyone criticises their vehicles for being boring and uninspiring but the reaility is they are going to absolutely bury Ford and Holden in the coming years if they don't lift their game. Two guys - Ford fans i might add - at work have already ditched their BA's and placed orders for the Aurion without even driving it.

Toyota must be doing good fleet deals at the moment. I went & look at some Toyota not to long ago, gf need a new car & want to get another Toyota to replace the old one, but we both found them boring & over price, plus the dealers were not really intersted in trying to sell us new car. Needless to say we found another brand of car that had more stuff in it, better price & were willing to sell us a car.

Those Mazda 3 are selling well. Ford needs to left there game in ther smaller car market.

This thread is headed New CAR Sales. The Hilux is not a car. If we're dealing with all vehicles are the Falcon and Commodore utes factored in? If we are dealing with passenger vehicles the Territory is probably still in the top ten and probably still the biggest selling SUV. And that makes only 4 Toyotas in the top 10, the same 4 that have been there for yonks (unless the RAV has made a surge).

The other thing is in its first full month the Captiva obviously hasn't made the huge impact from day 1 that the Territory did (and has maintained).

It wouldn't matter if Ford and Holden made the best cars in the world, the people who only want a car to go from A to B would still buy Toyota on the name only. Factors like performance, handling, internal space and primary safety won't come into their consideration.

Apart from raising quality further I really think Ford should try to kick this brand association thing by selling some of its cars under the Mazda brand.

I think people still need too get over big is worse, And don't think for a second the Commodore and Falcon can't match the Aurion and Camry Fuel economy marks.
In over 1200km in 3 days of driving a VE Calais, My best fuel consumption was 8.2l/100 and worst of 10.2l/100.. Total drive average was 9.1l/100.. Now i was hoping it would be very good i just wanted under 10l/100 and i got that i was very happy. And i wasn't driving for economy's like them ****s did, I didn't want too get bored.

Even though, as Slick said, the Commodore and Falcon can be as fuel efficient as any of the "large" Toyota product, Ford and Holden have to do something to lift the stigma associated with the big 2, like bringing in diesel options and much more promotion of the LP gas options available.

The Aurion is only a six cylinder Camry !!! Not Ford or Holden size that they claim it is.
AND it can only tow 1600kg, FORD Falcon 2300kg. Holden 2100kg. No good for my horse float.

That is why the Camry-Aurion are only good too a point. They offer great value and a top drivetrain, But when it comes too falcon-commodore they can offer more then just 1 engine and 1 tranny. Falc-Commo are more flexible too almost everyone's needs and likes.

IF mitsu could call their 4 and 6 cyl magna one car and ford/holden call their 6 and 8s and sedans and wagons (and utes?) one car. then we could call the aurion/camry one car, simialry for the two variants of hilux.

The figures then look like

Holden Commodore - 5,238
Toyota Camry/Aurion - 4,146
Toyota Corolla - 3,899
Ford Falcon - 3,447
HiLux 4x2/4x4 - 3,401
Mazda 3 - 2,222
Toyota Yaris - 2,812
Holden Astra - 1,606

Falcon 4th just in front of
Hilux 5th

I find it interesting thar Aurion doesn't seem to be pinching sales from the 380.

I wonder to what extent it's cannibalising Camry sales.

Is that a record of late? I was under the impression that the Fairlane was doing much worse than that.

Good to see that the Territory still outsold the Craptiva, and that the Craptiva outsold the Klugger.

Actually i was thinking that those Fairlane figures sound sort of OK, maybe there was a big fleet purchase.

Fairlanes are still selling, the biggest buyer of lanes at the moment is Hertz as renta cars i believe.
