Yes I do feel for the girl. Hope she gets better. HOWEVER, I hope this is not going to be a cop bashing thread. I'm sick of people criticising cops for chasing d***heads.

I think cops have a job to do.

The people that decided to act like idiots should have their license torn up (those who had one), made to do their Ls again and they must get 120 hours logged. Testing for them should be extreme.

They should also visit the trauma ward and talk to people who decided to hoon and as a result, smashed their pelvis, sternum and other places. Perhaps if they see what acting like a moron does, they might get a flicker in the brain (or whatever is between the ears!).

Funny thing is that people's initial reaction is to blame the cops.

Well let's look at it this way. If people weren't irresponsible jerks, we wouldn't need cops in the first place!

Do feel sorry for her, innocent by stander being hurt is always bad.

However, the Police are far from being at fault, the Perp is the guilty party here.

Just heard on the telly, that the little girl passed away last night. Terrible... my condolences to her family.

Now, lets watch the cop bashing in the media begin...

Apart from the tregedy of this girl needlessly losing her life, the destructive effect on the family, police officers and school mates will be something that lasts their lifetime.

I have no sympathy for the woman driver, especially as she made no attempt to stop after hitting the girl.

I don't know anything about this story but I assume she hit the girl deliberately hoping the cops would stop to assist? Hope she gets life in prison either way.

No police bashing is a good thing to have right now.

People make me sick. The poor officer who was driving the police car is now going to cop a whole load of ****, both from the media and family and friends involved. But what choice did he/she have? Let the driver get away? People like that should not be on our roads! I'm glad the driver is in custody, before more people lose their lives. Sure, the news report says that the death might have not occurred if the pursuit never happened, but what choice did the officer have?

My condolences to the family of Caitlin Hanrick, who until yesterday had her entire life to look forward to, and also to the police officers involved. Imagine how they must feel right now.

I agree with the sentiment, but theres rules in place for reasons, this is one. The idiot who hit the girl broke the law, and ignored the rules, if, and I say IF the police broke their rules, they are not really all that different. Disregard for laws and rules applies to both criminals and people paid to enforce them.

The rules may be wrong, Im not arguing that. But they do exist, and should be complied with. Im not sure what the idiot who hit the girl did to be pursued in the first place, but the end cost to this poor girl and her family is extremely high, so the cause would want to be serious. If not, the police should be raked over the coals to make sure they know not to ignore the rules they must also comply with.

i understand we dont want to just let idiots drive away, but we cant have them being pursued in school zones at 100mph either. This is not new, Warnambool in the late 80's, after a lengthy pursuit, allegedly called off a couple of k's outside town (there was dispute, that it was just short of town), some clown drove through town at 160kph and ended up killing a couple of people after hitting numerous parked cars, avoiding a person at a crossing.

its a tough choice, but one we cant avoid. Unfortunately.

You have to admire the mother:

"Everybody has to answer for what they do. I'm sure (the driver) didn't set out to kill a little girl. They have their own god and conscience to answer to."

The commisioner of police has his doubts:

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson conceded Caitlin may be alive if police had not started the chase but would not comment further before an internal investigation was completed.

if the police broke the laws regarding pursuits then its not the right thing to just turn a blind eye to it.

seperate to the actions of the other driver they are subject to rules and regulations like everyone else, and this is a classic example of why they need to be followed.

RIP to all the innocent bystanders who have ever been killed needlessly.

Sound comments IMO. I guess that's an issue for the investigators to sort out.

In no way could i possibly aportion blame with the police, its obviously the crim's fault. But if appropriate procedure was not followed, then that matter should be addressed... but not with the intention of laying blame upon the officer.

Condolences to the young girl's family.
