They are pretty ordinary as far as range and pattern is concerned. If all you want to do is talk to trucks and your mates that are 500m away or use local repeaters they will do the job.
If you are going bush then buy something else. |

My UHF ariel is just like a phone one. Short, black, and is glued to the rear window. It is just a little longer that a cell phone one. Works well.

I had the 4.5dBi one fitted to my front screen about 6 months ago and it works fine. I use it as Flappist suggests mainly to listen to truckies for licence and points endangering situations that may be ahead on the highway. I had it on the other day on Tamborine Mountain and picked up a very clear conversation from 90km north of here. I'm not all that knowledgeable about radios, so I don't know if it was because I was at a higher than normal elevation.

I have a 6.5db gain for the UHF. Now I just need a better open scan UHF radio. The "Sundowner" I was given for free works well, but you miss too much on the 39 channels you are not listening to.

Had one in the BA XR, it was crapola, now have a RFI Mobile phone type device which seems to be much better.
