Default Normal or Not?

Just bought my first ford, an AUIII XR6 4.0intech manual sedan.
Couple of questions if anyone can help, is it normal to have to give throttle assistance on start up? (hot & cold)
And what should I be getting roughly out of a tank of fuel around town?

thanks Davmil :togo:

No throttle should be used on startup.
450-550k's.

mine is an auto, so comparison might not be accurate, but i never have to give throttle assistance on startup. Needing assistance in hot seems to me like a problem.

arount town, i normally get 400-600KMS, depending on how heavy my right foot is at the time

i always use my throttle on start up. just a bad habit. and it makes my car sound and start healthier. seems like it coughs and splutters if i dont use it. especially if the car has been out in the sun for ages.

Not quite true, an EFI system won't flood an engine when the throttle is used. In fact it does the opposite, and creates a leaner mixture.
Some manufactures do actually advise using part throttle on very hot days (40> deg) if the engine doesn't start within a couple seconds. I think even Ford do, or at least they used to.
Opening the throttle simply allows a leaner mixture, something which the IAC may potentially not provide on extremely hot days.

I've actually never needed to do this on any EFI car I've owned, and I can't say I know anyone who has needed to do so.

Either way, it certainly won't do any harm, however it almost always isn't needed.

Rick.

yeah my aunty had problems with her echo flooding but it says to hold full throttle in the manual to get a lean mixture then she fires up so sorry to say but im with SOX on this its not bad for a car and makes a leaner mixture.
but yeah u shouldnt have to do it on an efi car but gas i would say u would have to and all my mates that have converted to gas have been told to start with slight throttle.
cheers josh.

Factory EGAS models can't use any throttle ... the starter cuts out.
Although when the EGAS engines do flood on startup (can happen on the odd occasions) .... you can use extremely light throttle application .... and it eventually gets it going. It can be a real PITA sometimes.

Even worse when you let people drive it that dont know anything about starting gas cars and you forget to tell them and they wack in a bit of go pedal. One time that happend ended up not starting for about 10mins

car wash people are good for this trick. I usually tell them not to turn it off and let it idle ... much easier.
